This morning was a bit of a bust at Kerry Park. I was hoping to arrive and see the fog that they predicted in the forecast and failing that a sliver of a moon should have been rising behind the city just as it was getting light. There wasn't any fog and there was a cloud bank where the moon would have been. D'oh!!
I carry a little LED flashlight in my camera bag which I used to illuminate the street sign. It took me several tries to get the photographer steady. It was below freezing so we were all dancing around a bit to keep warm. I also realized that if I took shorter exposures than him I had a better chance of him standing still throughout my exposure. I guess I could have hollered out and asked him to stand still for me but I prefer to shoot like a ninja. I don't know where the other two photographers went after they set up their cameras but they were missing some of the best light.

This image was made in Cornwall this year. I was trying to use the very hard and sharp nature of the rock to juxtapose the soft moving water against it. I find the contrast in these situations appealing; they are almost more than the sum of parts. I also particularly like the dark grey wet rocks texture against the foreground subtle colours. You can even see reds, browns and blues in there. I also like the subtle conditions I found myself in on this sunset shoot and the thin band of light on the horizon is almost understated. Honestly I was hoping for the sun to burst underneath it and illuminate the bottom of the clouds, but even though this didn’t happen I particularly like the contrast between the heavy clouds and stormy sea feel to this image. Anyway, this little part of the coast near Treyarnon bay I know rather well. I must have done about 100 sunsets over the years I’ve been going there, and I never tire of trying to make something new from it. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what you think…
Squeesing and pushing every bit of an underexposed (-2 EV) Raw file!
This picture was meant to be the third shot for an HDR file. Unfortunately the three pictures were not perfectly aligned (no tripod). But before deleting the picture series I decided to play with the GND (graduated neutral density filter) in lightroom. I started by applying a -1/3 EV GND mask to the sky, and a +2EV mask to the rest of the picture. The first attempt, even if not perfect in particular througout the transition between trees and sky, looked already more than promising and pushed me to convert the raw in tiff16bit and to repeat the same operation in PS CS4, that in contrast to Lr provides more latitute and control on the mask definition. And this is the results. Basically I have squeezed the 10 EV of a RAW file in the 8EV of a jpeg.
What surprised me was the huge latitude in pushing the shadows without having to deal with cromance or luminance noise. So if your scene have a strong luminace contrast (10-11EV max) and you want to reduce the risk to burn the highlights, simply expose correctly for the highlights and try to recover the shadows detail in CS4. Furthermore this approach allows firstly to remove the risk of having moving objects (like the tree leaves) and secondly to increase the shutters speed of 2EV, so bye bye dammed tripod! The only precautions are to assure yourself that the scene doesn't exceed the dynamic range of your camera RAW (usually 10-12EV) through the spot exposure meter and to shoot with low ISO sensitivities (100-200).

Barking and bitting his ball at the same time. Why? Because I wouldn't give him the signal "one", "two" or "three" to run to the trees and back :) I was simply asking him "what do you want?", knowing I will, once again, make him doubt my IQ. I almost expected him to start barking s l o w l y, you know, so that stupid human would finally understand :)
Ouzo cannot simply be somewhere and run. He won't. (except at the park where he runs ahead to the water than waits for me there to thow a ball). Without having a proper reason, he would simply jump in front of you and maybe bark until you give him direction or produce a toy. He needs prompts, he needs actors, he needs rules. All our games have rules, which he remembers and sometimes changes. God forbids you'd call "Two" before "One", he shakes his head, trots in place and barks at you. But if he feels like changing the rules, then everyone needs to play accordingly.
He is a complex character, most of the time a very logical being, who loves a challange and most imporantly, loves to challange you.

A bit of garden moss growing in our garden. Bits of garden debris are on top of the moss (green). The debris looks like wood chips, dried grass clippings, and dead flowers from trees and bushes.
The round things with points are not "pointy nosed aliens" but are a "spore capsules" full of spores, which when mature, will open and allow the millions of spores to be blown about by the wind.
Met Life Blimp pilot was having a rough day with gusty winds, a bit up and down and slow forward speed, but interesting shot, found in North Carolina.
Bit of a messy photo, but it's quite a rare bird for the UK, with only 3 ever recorded here. I struggled with the harsh light and heat haze so this was the best I could manage. Pleased to see it though and a nice looking bird
