bit of a rarity here, only see them in migration, great looking bird
from cornell
A delicate dove-headed shorebird, the Buff-breasted Sandpiper is found primarily in migration in areas of short grass. It migrates primarily through the middle of the continent from its arctic breeding grounds to southern South America.
Bit late posting, not by just two months but 17 years. Pretty close to Halloween so these must be grown for commercial purposes and aren't going to be ploughed under hopefully. Field is in Ladner, BC.
London was a bit dreary today being cold and also raining. I walked up to the Boating Lake in Regent's Park to capture this winter scene.
The shack outback. I found this old storage shed behind a run down house that had some very "interesting" artwork spray painted on the walls. This little shed was actually a lot more comforting than the house, which was rather eirie... My wife thinks that I need to find someone to watch my back when I go to these places (but I'm kind of an introvert)
this is a handy little screwdriver that holds 5 small bits in the handle. The problem is that the bits don't stay in place. I think they're supposed to be held in by a magnet but it's not working. Can magnets lose their magnetism?

When I have gone to Heather Farms in Walnut Creek in the past, this Red-shouldered
Hawk, or one that looks like it, never gives me a chance to raise my camera before it takes off. This day I spent, probably over two hours, as it repeatedly posed from tree to tree with me getting within a few feet of it and never looking at me. I finally, feeling 'a bit guilty' of possibly interfering with it's hunt, I decided to leave before getting my flight shot! Okay, I think it looked once and flew over my head!!...lol
It is very evident these days how a little bit of light can add so much to an image. This image was taken on another rare blue sky day we had in November when we hiked a waterfall in a national park. It was cold enough to form icicles along the path leading to the top of the falls. Although most of the path was shaded, there was enough light to create the blue color in the icicles. These days it is a challenge to take images with very little light and no moody atmosphere in our days. I even welcome some colder temperatures for macro shots of ice. Meanwhile, we shall start thinking of plans for our next road trip in 2025. We hope to visit a few more national parks in Canada.
*spontaneous eruption of the bits and bobs box
============================================
while on holiday a few shots have been taken and if shots were not lucky enough to get a lucrative position of "photo a day" they found themselves in the BBB (bits and bobs box). I am not sure what happened , did I disturbed the box or bits and bobs got a bit rowdy inside (maybe some quarrel occurred arguing who is bit and who is bob and the whole thing gone violent) but the thing , the box, erupted, it went boom! blown to pieces and bits and bobs were flying everywhere, when dust settled I said to them "hey bits! and you bobs! off you go to flickr! I got enough bother with "photo a day" business and go they did ...
if you follow me you probably are going to unfollow , and I can't blame you, as tens of bits and bobs are unleashed , they are coming ... and coming ... and coming ....

Well friends, I am a bit sad tonight. My dragonflies were not out in full force like normal...hmmm...makes ya wonder. This is one of just a few shots that I got. I guess sometimes are great sometimes you just wonder where they all went. I spent a lengthy amount of time following this guy and do you know.....he NEVER landed in a spot to get a super clear view. I was fighting with the grass the whole time. Whatever happened to them landing on the perfect flower for the pretty shot...hmmm? Saying all that...I had to vent I guess, I have realized that even though this was all I got out of a trip....it was enough.
I could have left with absolutely nothing... but that would have been ok....because I went. You just never know until you go what blessing you will find~

There were people working on the rice fields near the trees they use to perch and this one was a bit far away.
A bit of black and white action in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Our little weekend getaway trip allowed us to enjoy some badly needed outdoor time and this spot was a highlight.
This image was made in Cornwall this year. I was trying to use the very hard and sharp nature of the rock to juxtapose the soft moving water against it. I find the contrast in these situations appealing; they are almost more than the sum of parts. I also particularly like the dark grey wet rocks texture against the foreground subtle colours. You can even see reds, browns and blues in there. I also like the subtle conditions I found myself in on this sunset shoot and the thin band of light on the horizon is almost understated. Honestly I was hoping for the sun to burst underneath it and illuminate the bottom of the clouds, but even though this didn’t happen I particularly like the contrast between the heavy clouds and stormy sea feel to this image. Anyway, this little part of the coast near Treyarnon bay I know rather well. I must have done about 100 sunsets over the years I’ve been going there, and I never tire of trying to make something new from it. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what you think…
And a bit of blue for Monday.
Flypaper textured too of course :-)
The first photo out of my newly built PC, I'm lucky in having a son to build it for me. I'm loving all the extra processing speed in photoshop especially.
Since my last grass technique was a bit too unkempt to make a nice football field, I tried out some other pieces to see if I could come up with something neater :)
This is basically made from two elements:
32828 - Bar 1L with 1 x 1 Round Plate with Hollow Stud
30126 - Minifig, Plume Feathers with Pin
I think this looks much more like what you'd find on a football field, orderly but not so patterned that it looks unnatural. A bonus is that since the elements are loosely organised in lines, it is possible make white lines in the grass by changing the color of some of the plumes. The minifigs still have to balance on top of the grass though :)
I've made a tutorial for this type of grass that can be found here:
Squeesing and pushing every bit of an underexposed (-2 EV) Raw file!
This picture was meant to be the third shot for an HDR file. Unfortunately the three pictures were not perfectly aligned (no tripod). But before deleting the picture series I decided to play with the GND (graduated neutral density filter) in lightroom. I started by applying a -1/3 EV GND mask to the sky, and a +2EV mask to the rest of the picture. The first attempt, even if not perfect in particular througout the transition between trees and sky, looked already more than promising and pushed me to convert the raw in tiff16bit and to repeat the same operation in PS CS4, that in contrast to Lr provides more latitute and control on the mask definition. And this is the results. Basically I have squeezed the 10 EV of a RAW file in the 8EV of a jpeg.
What surprised me was the huge latitude in pushing the shadows without having to deal with cromance or luminance noise. So if your scene have a strong luminace contrast (10-11EV max) and you want to reduce the risk to burn the highlights, simply expose correctly for the highlights and try to recover the shadows detail in CS4. Furthermore this approach allows firstly to remove the risk of having moving objects (like the tree leaves) and secondly to increase the shutters speed of 2EV, so bye bye dammed tripod! The only precautions are to assure yourself that the scene doesn't exceed the dynamic range of your camera RAW (usually 10-12EV) through the spot exposure meter and to shoot with low ISO sensitivities (100-200).
What do you think? If you have questions, just leave a comment!
Just a bit of fun [sound on] as its another Miserable Monday
But please do spare a thought for our poor wildlife who must be suffering with the battering winds and relentless rain

Took a bit of finagling, but I like a bit of finagling, figuring out how to get the angle right so her face was in the right part of the frame, working against the pool, where the edges were curved, having Katie straddle me (give us a bit o' shade) while I lay on the diving board to get myself over Meghan, ignoring the fact that Katie was just in the pool herself, so pool water was dripping all over my back (oh, not such a hardship, hot day, water cooling me down, I've had it much worse), keeping my camera dry, getting the camera over Meghan, not dropping my camera in the water.
Photographic algebra, and you know what? I like it. I like having to work against some variables, work against them knowing that if I just work it a bit, jiggle the key a bit, blow on the Nintendo cartridge, know that if I give it a bit of effort, I can pull it off.
And even when you don't, it's worth it to hang out with good people and have a bit of a goof at the pool.
Oh, also, I'M TEACHING IN ENGLAND!!! COME, ATTEND, AND BE CHANGED FOREVER!!!!
A bit more editing with the Flickr editor makes the image more vibrant I think. Do you agree? Which do you prefer this version or the first version?
Edited in Sony Imaging Edge Desktop from ARW files to a TIFF or JPG file.

A bit of waiting went into this second upload from a trip to the Highlands last week. We arrived at Loch Assynt and spent about 45 minutes shooting under grey skies before a downpour had us sheltering for another 45. Back out and another 50 minutes passed before we finally got what we wanted, sunlight coming through a gap in the clouds to illuminate our subject against the dark hills and skies beyond. For every yin there is a yang and so we were then too late to get a pie from the famous Lochinver Larder down the road!
