Explore March 22/08 ..Anna's Hummingbird ..Unlike most hummingbirds, this bird sings during courtship. During the breeding season, males can be observed performing a remarkable display, called a display dive, on their territories. When another bird (such as a female Anna's Hummingbird) flies onto a male's territory, he rises up approximately 30m (100 ft) before diving over the recipient. At the bottom of the dive the males reach speeds exceeding 23 m/s (50 mph), and produce a loud sound, described by some as an "explosive squeak" with their outer tail-feathers. IMG_7368

See in large if you like...From my archives...

While shooting a group of wading birds feed on fish and tadpoles, this Anhinga surfaced and proceeded to scamper up the trunk of a tree to a branch where it could dry its feathers. After the bird gets dry, it will dive into the water again to catch more food.

I am always on the lookout for Red-shouldered Hawks since they are among the most colorful raptors in North America. I spotted this hawk on my drive home from a "birding hotspot" that did not provide any substational photo opportunities. This bird, however, was perched over the road in the midst of a group of neighborhood homes. In addition, the hawk was remarkably impervious to my efforts to photography it. After speaking with some of the neighbors while capturing these images, I learned this bird has been quite conspicuous, perching on the roofs of homes, backyard sheds and the telephone poles on the street, all while the residents go about their daily business. I might have to return to this neighborhood.

I saw this Limpkin foraging for Apple Snails this morning at the Lox boat ramp. The bird caught a few small snails, not enough to fill its tummy and he kept on looking.

A very serious looking Tofu waited for the return of THE BIRDS after they had all fled in panic when I appeared on the scene to refill the feeders. It's kind of annoying that they are afraid of me, the one who feeds them every day, and that they pay no attention to Tofu who is a CAT after all even if he pretends to be a stuffed toy.
