Short-eared Owl vs Grey ghost (male Northern Harrier)

Owls and harriers rely on hearing and vision when hunting. With their disc-shaped face directing sound to their ears, they are able to locate prey with hearing alone. Harriers and many owls can be observed gliding low over open country. Sometimes hovering for a brief moment, they may look and listen for prey moving in the vegetation below. When a potential meal is spotted or heard they will drop down, talons extended, to seize the prey.

Like other vultures, it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. It establishes nesting colonies in cliffs that are undisturbed by humans while coverage of open areas and availability of dead animals within dozens of kilometres of these cliffs is high. It grunts and hisses at roosts or when feeding on carrion.

The maximum recorded lifespan of the griffon vulture is 41.4 years for an individual in captivity.

It breeds on crags in mountains in southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia, laying one egg. Griffon vultures may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident. Juveniles and immature individuals may migrate far or embark on long-distance movements.

Steller's sea eagle

This Eagle, and all following bird photo's were taken at the "Birds of Prey" Avian Center in Awendaw, South Carolina. This organization does a fantastic job rehabbing these raptors and eventually releasing them back into the wild.http://www.thecenterforbirdsofprey.org/

The Landing Spot

We have a pair of kestrels that live in our neighborhood. They are very active hunters and we love to watch them. So colorful and beautiful.

Sunnyvale, CA. Two local cooper`s hawks are nesting in the neighborhood and spending a lot of time in the trees near the streets, providing some excellent views for passerbys.
