e slechtvalk (Falco peregrinus) behoort tot de grootste valken. De prooi wordt in een snelle duikvlucht geslagen en is meestal op slag dood. De prooien zijn meestal vogels (duiven, eenden, enz.), maar soms worden ook andere dieren (die op de grond leven) gegrepen. De valk komt voor over de hele wereld (zie kaartje) en er worden 19 ondersoorten onderscheiden.[2]

I live on the edge of town and when the sky is blue, birds of prey often circle over our garden. So they did last week. Three buzzards soared through the sky, circling. They were magnificent! And of course they got a page in my illustrated journal.
