In the Florida, non-migratory, resident osprey are often seen and extensively studied in Florida Bay, the southern Everglades, and the Florida Keys.
The osprey is also known as the fish hawk, sea hawk, river hawk, eagle hawk, and "gavilán pescador", which means "fishing hawk" in Spanish. The French name for the osprey is balbusard pêcheur, which means "bald buzzard fisherman".
On 15th May we had 10 red kites and a buzzard flying around the hill behind our house. All photos taken hand-held with a Canon 1100D with 300mm zoom lens. Manually focused
Peace Valley Park, Bucks County, PA - This young redtail was in a life and death hide and seek match with a gray squirrel. The hawk made three attempts at the squirrel while I watched but failed each time. They were both in the same tree but lucky for the squirrel the tree had too many branches and vines for the hawk to grab him. Unfortunately for me there were too many branches and vines to get any shots of the action.
These pictures were taken during a photographic competition I attended at the University of Warwick. I think I have identified these birds correctly, but feel free to put me right as I am no expert.
Had the most awesome day at Claire Carter and Hawkeye Bird of Prey Photography Workshop in Thoresby Park. A privilege to get close to such beautiful birds and I learned such a lot about bird photography that I hope I can put in to practice in future. My photos (just a few here out of 100s I took today) are pale imitations of what is achievable but I'm happy with (some of) my efforts with limited kit.
