Immature Auger Buzzard, Buteo augur, 60cm / 24in. Fairly COMMON resident of open country. rocky outcrops and cultivation. Auger means "piercer" (like the tool).

Diagnostic African Hawk-Eagle, Aquila spilogaster, 68 cm / 27 in. Record shot of a quite distant bird. Fairly COMMON in open woodland, bush and semi-arid habitat but none came in close.

Kori Bustard, Ardeotis kori struthiunculus, 105-135 cm. / 3 ft. 5 in- 4 ft 5 in. COMMON. Open grassy haitat and short grass near isolated trees and bushes. Plains, arid plateaus, high veld grassland, arid scrub, lightly-wooded savanna, open dry bush veld and semi-desert. Not found in wooded or forested habitat because this is the largest flying bird of Africa and requires a lot of open space in which to take flight.

The male is mainly glossy black with white streaking, but females and immature birds are browner. The African darter differs in appearance from the American darter most recognisably by its thin white lateral neck stripe against a rufous background colour. The pointed bill should prevent confusion with cormorants.

It is an 80 cm long cormorant-like fish-eating species with a very long neck, like other anhingas.

Male Magpie Mannikin, Spermestes fringilloides, 13cm / 5in. Very local and UNCOMMON in forest edge, secondary growth and cultivation. There occur two widely separated populations. Handheld.
