The grey heron is a long-legged wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn.

I love Red-shouldered Hawks in Florida (Buteo lineatus extimus). They have much paler heads than the other North American subspecies, and like many birds in Florida, often seem quite tolerant of people. They often allow me to walk along side them as they hop off fence posts while they hunt for grasshoppers. I can't believe I took this shot with a Rebel XT. Cameras have come a long way in the last 13 years!

Grey capped woodpecker,

A diminutive woodpecker of mixed deciduous forests and gardens, from sea level into mountains. Blackish above, pale with black streaking and buffy-gray wash below. The subspecies in Taiwan (kaleensis) has bold black-and-white head pattern and very little gray in cap. Male's tiny red nape mark often invisible. Most commonly heard calls a weak “wik” and fussy-sounding, descending rattle. (E-bird)

A huge, distinctive hornbill with a large yellow bill and casque. Black face, wings, and breast contrast with white neck, belly, and tail. Sexes are similar, except that females have an entirely yellow casque, a pale iris, and bare pink skin around the eye. In flight, note the white tail with black band, and the black wings with a yelowish-white band and a white edge. The species inhabits dense evergreen forests. Another image I captured of a Bronzewing pigeon on my hike this morning. I just love the colours of these birds and the almost shimmer that appears on their wings if caught at the right angle.

Although mainly nocturnal, the little owl can be spotted in the day hunting invertebrates (especially worms), small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and small birds. It is often seen perched a telegraph pole, an old parkland tree, along a hedgerow, or on a rock; from these positions, it quietly scans the ground for prey. When it spots something, it swoops down and catches its victim with either its claws or beak. Little owls breed between March and August, forming monogamous pairs and nesting in hollow trees.
