Time for a bit of colour. Looks like we have a resident population that's going to say over winter this year. First time for a few years they have stayed to this point. Also the first time we have had a decent wet season in many years so this might be a factor. Off the back of a good wet there are always plenty of insects around.

Rainbow bee-eater. ( Merops ornatus )

Rainbow Bee-eaters eat insects, mainly catching bees and wasps, as well as dragonflies, beetles, butterflies and moths. They catch flying insects on the wing.

Rainbow Bee-eaters gather in small flocks before returning to summer breeding areas. Both males and females select a suitable nesting site in a sandy bank and dig a long tunnel leading to a nesting chamber, which is often lined with grasses. Both parents incubate the eggs and both feed the young, sometimes with the assistance of others.

A Great Blue Heron pauses at the water’s edge, beak parted as if sharing a secret with the fading day. These moments remind me of the quiet balance between motion and stillness that nature holds so well, powerful yet calm, patient yet alert.

Although mainly nocturnal, the little owl can be spotted in the day hunting invertebrates (especially worms), small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and small birds. It is often seen perched a telegraph pole, an old parkland tree, along a hedgerow, or on a rock; from these positions, it quietly scans the ground for prey. When it spots something, it swoops down and catches its victim with either its claws or beak. Little owls breed between March and August, forming monogamous pairs and nesting in hollow trees.

One of the best natural insecticides that we can find and that, little by little, has been displaced from our cities and towns because of an architecture not very friendly to birds.
