Hibiscus
Hibiscus L. é um gênero botânico, com cerca de 300 espécies, inserido na família das Malvaceae, com flores e folhas exuberantes. Devido à nova taxonomia pela filogenética (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group), muitas espécies que pertenciam a esse gênero estão migrando para outros gêneros. Por exemplo: Hibiscus esculentus L., a planta do quiabo, agora é Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench. O cultivo dos exemplares do gênero, tanto ornamental como econômico, está disseminado nas regiões subtropicais e tropicais, cuidando para não sofrerem com geadas e temperaturas baixas constantes.

Hibiscus (/hɨˈbɪskəs/ or /haɪˈbɪskəs/) is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is quite large, containing several hundred species that are native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Member species are often noted for their showy flowers and are commonly known simply as hibiscus, or less widely known as rose mallow. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees. The generic name is derived from the Greek word ἱβίσκος (hibískos), which was the name Pedanius Dioscorides (ca. 40–90) gave to Althaea officinalis.
Description:
The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, purple or yellow, and from 4–18 cm broad. Flower color in certain species, such as H. mutabilis and H. tiliaceus, changes with age.[5] The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule dehisces (splits open) at maturity. It is of red and white colours. It is an example of complete flowers.
Uses:
Symbolism and culture
Hibiscus species represent nations: Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. The hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti. The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali, and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, India, often with the goddess and the flower merging in form. The hibiscus is used as an offering to goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha in Hindu worship.
In the Philippines, the gumamela (local name for hibiscus) is used by children as part of a bubble-making pastime. The flowers and leaves are crushed until the sticky juices come out. Hollow papaya stalks are then dipped into this and used as straws for blowing bubbles.
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Tahitian and Hawaiian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or in a relationship. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship. The hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower.
Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named her first novel Purple Hibiscus after the delicate flower.
The bark of the hibiscus contains strong bast fibres that can be obtained by letting the stripped bark set in the sea to let the organic material rot away.
Landscaping
Many species are grown for their showy flowers or used as landscape shrubs, and are used to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
Paper
One species of Hibiscus, known as kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), is extensively used in paper-making.
Beverage

The tea made of hibiscus flowers is known by many names in many countries around the world and is served both hot and cold. The beverage is well known for its color, tanginess and flavor.
It is known as bissap in West Africa, agua de jamaica in Mexico and Honduras (the flower being flor de jamaica) and gudhal (गुड़हल) in India. Some refer to it as roselle, a common name for the hibiscus flower. In Jamaica, Trinidad and many other islands in the Caribbean, the drink is known as sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa; not to be confused with Rumex acetosa, a species sharing the common name sorrel). In Ghana, the drink is known as soobolo in one of the local languages.
Roselle is typically boiled in an enamel-coated large stock pot as most West Indians believe the metal from aluminum, steel or copper pots will destroy the natural minerals and vitamins.[citation needed]
In Cambodia, a cold beverage can be prepared by first steeping the petals in hot water until the colors are leached from the petals, then adding lime juice (which turns the beverage from dark brown/red to a bright red), sweeteners (sugar/honey) and finally cold water/ice cubes.
In Egypt,[citation needed] Sudan and the Arab world, hibiscus tea is known as karkadé (كركديه), and is served as both a hot and a cold drink.
Food
Dried hibiscus is edible, and it is often a delicacy in Mexico. It can also be candied and used as a garnish.
The roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used as a vegetable. The species Hibiscus suratensis Linn synonymous to Hibiscus aculeatus G. Don is noted in Visayas Philippines being a souring ingredient for almost all local vegetables and menus. Known as Labog in the Visayan area, (or Labuag/Sapinit in Tagalog), the species is a very good ingredient in cooking native chicken soup. Certain species of hibiscus are also beginning to be used more widely as a natural source of food coloring (E163),[citation needed] and replacement of Red #3 / E127.
Hibiscus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidopteran species, including Chionodes hibiscella, Hypercompe hambletoni, the nutmeg moth, and the turnip moth.
Health benefits
The tea is popular as a natural diuretic; it contains vitamin C and minerals, and is used traditionally as a mild medicine.
A 2008 USDA study shows consuming hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure in a group of prehypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults. Three cups of tea daily resulted in an average drop of 8.1 mmHg in their systolic blood pressure, compared to a 1.3 mmHg drop in the volunteers who drank the placebo beverage. Study participants with higher blood pressure readings (129 or above) had a greater response to hibiscus tea: their systolic blood pressure went down by 13.2 mmHg. These data support the idea that drinking hibiscus tea in an amount readily incorporated into the diet may play a role in controlling blood pressure, although more research is required.
Studies have demonstrated the anti-hypertensive effects of H. sabdariffa in both humans and animals. It has been proposed that the antihypertensive effects of H. sabdariffa is due to its angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibiting activity. In a randomized, controlled clinical trial involving 39 patients with mild to moderate hypertension, Captopril was compared to an extract of H. sabdariffa for antihypertensive effects. Subjects taking an extract of H.sabdariffa, consumed daily before breakfast for four weeks, found reduction in blood pressure similar to Captopril. Another randomized, placebo clinical trial involving 54 study participants with moderate hypertension demonstrated a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However upon discontinuation of treatment, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were subsequently elevated.
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has a number of medical uses in Chinese herbology. Lokapure s.g.et al. their research indicates some potential in cosmetic skin care; for example, an extract from the flowers of Hibiscus rosa- sinensis has been shown to function as an anti-solar agent by absorbing ultraviolet radiation.
In the Indian traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda, hibiscus, especially white hibiscus and red hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), is considered to have medicinal properties. The roots are used to make various concoctions believed to cure ailments such as cough, hair loss or hair greying. As a hair treatment, the flowers are boiled in oil along with other spices to make a medicated hair oil. The leaves and flowers are ground into a fine paste with a little water, and the resulting lathery paste is used as a shampoo plus conditioner.
Hibiscus tea also contains bioflavonoids, which are believed to help prevent an increase in LDL cholesterol, which can increase the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
A previous animal study demonstrated the effects of H.sabdariffa extract on atherosclerosis in rabbits. Notably, a reduction in triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein was observed in rabbits consuming a high cholesterol diet (HCD) in addition to H.sabdariffa extract compared to rabbits only fed HCD, suggesting a beneficial effect.[16] Furthermore, the H. sabdariffa seed is abundant in phytosterol and tocopherol, plant forms of cholesterol that have antioxidant and LDL cholesterol lowering effects.
Precautions and Contraindications:
Pregnancy and Lactation
While the mechanism is not well understood, previous animal studies have demonstrated both an inhibitory effect of H. sabdariffa on muscle tone and the anti-fertility effects of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, respectively. The extract of H. sabdariffa has been shown to stimulate contraction of the rat bladder and uterus; the H.rosa-sinensis extract has exhibited contraceptive effects in the form of estrogen activity in rats. These findings have not been observed in humans. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is also thought to have emmenagogue effects which can stimulate menstruation and, in some women, cause an abortion. Due to the documented adverse effects in animal studies and the reported pharmacological properties, the H. sabdariffa and H.rosa-sinensis are not recommended for use during pregnancy. Additionally, they are not recommended while breastfeeding due to the lack of reliable information on its safety and use.

Drug Interactions
It is postulated that H. sabdariffa interacts with diclofenac, chloroquine and acetaminophen by altering the pharmacokinetics. In healthy human volunteers, the H. sabdariffa extract was found to reduce the excretion of diclofenac upon co-administration. Additionally, co-administration of Karkade (H. sabdariffa), a common Sudanese beverage, was found to reduce chloroquine bioavailability. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen when administered with the Zobo (H.sabdariffa) drink. Further studies are needed to demonstrate clinical significance.
Species:
In temperate zones, probably the most commonly grown ornamental species is Hibiscus syriacus, the common garden hibiscus, also known in some areas as the "Rose of Althea" or "Rose of Sharon" (but not to be confused with the unrelated Hypericum calycinum, also called "Rose of Sharon"). In tropical and subtropical areas, the Chinese hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis), with its many showy hybrids, is the most popular hibiscus.

A lot of the information released regarding water related issues refers to organic and inorganic minerals. There are many differing opinions on the best sources for dietary minerals that compare the various merits of rock (inorganic) minerals sources and plant (organic) based sources. Everyone wants to be healthy, and we hear a great deal about the importance of vitamins and minerals. In fact, our bodies need almost 70 different minerals to stay healthy and perform essential functions. In this article, we will look a closer look at the difference between organic and inorganic minerals.
What are Organic Minerals?
Before we delve too deep, it’s a good idea to understand what we mean when we’re talking about an organic mineral. After all, the term itself seems to be contradictory, how can a mineral be organic? In this context, when we refer to a mineral as being organic, it means that the specific element is bonded to a carbon atom. Carbon is also an organic element, and all living creatures are carbon based lifeforms. So, a bond with a carbon atom could, in theory, make any element bioavailable and thus usable by a living organism. This is only conjectured at this point, and further research is needed to prove this theory.
We do know that our bodies are composed of 70% water, our mineral sources in nature have always been water based and sourced from the water we drink and the food that we eat. Organic minerals were once or are still alive, and their electrons (like those in a human body) spin in a clockwise direction. The cells in an organic mineral can form ionic bonds with the body, and they can break down to assist in bodily functions, including tissue repair.
What are Inorganic Minerals?
An inorganic mineral is a material that has never been alive; it has not been bonded with carbon, and it could never bring life to a cell. In fact, the body will treat these materials or metals as if they are a toxin. An inorganic mineral is tightly wound, and it cannot break down easily to assist the body. The electrons in this material spin in a counterclockwise direction and this makes them fundamentally out of sync with a human body.
Inorganic materials in nature are often removed from water by evaporation, where only the water is removed, leaving the inorganic minerals and chemicals behind. The modern water filtering processes in our homes mimic this natural phenomenon to give us a purer and safer drinking water.
As our water runs through the ground inorganic minerals are picked up and carried along. Water is an extremely effective solvent, and many materials can be easily dissolved in it. Inorganic minerals cannot be used by a human or animal life form, but plants can use these materials. In fact, plants are the organisms that can turn this material into an organic mineral via photosynthesis, but this is in no way beneficial in our drinking water.
The Dangers of Inorganic Minerals
Inorganic minerals and chemicals can harm us because they cannot be absorbed as a source of nutrition in our cell wall like organic minerals. But, this material has to go somewhere, so it gets deposited elsewhere in our bodies. These inorganic mineral deposits can cause a variety of health related issues depending on where they end up, such as clogged arteries, arthritis, gallstones, kidney related issues, and joint pains. A common inorganic mineral found in drinking water is Lime or calcium carbonate, and this is the same tough material found in cement. People that ingest large quantities of Lime can suffer from disfigured hands and fingers that are extremely painful.
An expert in this field, Dr. Norman W. Walker wrote a book on this subject. He discovered that a person drinking 1L of water each day over a seventy year period would ingest 90-136 kg of rock, which would include materials, such as magnesium and lime, that a human body simply cannot use. A great deal of this inorganic mineral material would be eliminated via excretory means, but some would still remain, and they could be a source of some of the health problems we mentioned earlier.
So, do you have any of these inorganic minerals present in your water supply? There is a simple experiment that you can carry out at home to check if you have a problem. Get a pot and fill it with tap water, leave it out in the sun and let the water evaporate away. As we mentioned above, this will only remove pure water or hydrogen, and oxygen and everything else will be left behind. If you discover that your pot contains mineral deposits, you may want to explore your water treatment options. A reverse osmosis filtration systems can remove inorganic minerals from your water supply.
Which is the Best Mineral Source?
There are some people that say that we can only use mineral elements if they are sourced from the food we eat, which would make them organic minerals. Others are adamant that ground rock based inorganic minerals are the best way to fulfill all of our mineral needs. There are even people that propose that liquid mineral sources, such as ionic supplements, sea water, and natural mineral water, are the best choice for health.
Sadly, thanks to pollution it would be extremely risky to drink seawater or water sourced directly from a mineral stream. Also, many of the foods that are grown today are somewhat deficient in many of the organic minerals that we need to stay healthy. A modified version of the iron spot test was shown to effectively reveal the presence of sodium iron EDTA (NaFeEDTA) in fortified flour.
The traditional iron spot test is a common qualitative test used in flour mills to detect iron fortificants in flour. It uses three reagents and causes red spots to appear if the flour is fortified with most iron compounds. However with NaFeEDTA, using hydrogen peroxide as one of the reagents has the opposite effect as it causes the spots to disappear. When hydrogen peroxide is excluded as a reagent, the spot test can be used as a qualitative test with flour fortified with NaFeEDTA.

Landscaping
Many species are grown for their showy flowers or used as landscape shrubs, and are used to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
Hibiscus is a very hardy, versatile plant and in tropical conditions it can enhance the beauty of any garden. Being versatile it adapts itself easily to balcony gardens in crammed urban spaces and can be easily grown in pots as a creeper or even in hanging pots. It is a perennial and flowers throughout the year. As it comes in a variety of colors, it's a plant which can add vibrancy to any garden.
The only infestation that gardeners need to be vigilant about is mealybugs. Mealybug infestations are easy to spot as they are clearly visible as a distinct white cottony infestation on buds, leaves or even stems. To protect the plant you need to trim away the infected part, spray with water, and apply an appropriate pesticide.
Paper
One species of Hibiscus, known as kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), is extensively used in paper-making.
Rope and construction
The inner bark of the sea hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus), also called 'hau', is used in Polynesia for making rope, and the wood for making canoe floats.[citation needed] The ropes on the missionary ship Messenger of Peace were made of fibres from hibiscus trees.
Beverage

The tea made of the calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa is known by many names in many countries around the world and is served both hot and cold. The beverage is well known for its red colour, tartness and unique flavour. Additionally, it is highly nutritious because of its vitamin C content.
It is known as bissap in West Africa, "Gul e Khatmi" in Urdu & Persian, agua de jamaica in Mexico and Central America (the flower being flor de jamaica) and Orhul in India. Some refer to it as roselle, a common name for the hibiscus flower. In Jamaica, Trinidad and many other islands in the Caribbean, the drink is known as sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa; not to be confused with Rumex acetosa, a species sharing the common name sorrel). In Ghana, the drink is known as soobolo in one of the local languages.
In Cambodia, a cold beverage can be prepared by first steeping the petals in hot water until the colors are leached from the petals, then adding lime juice (which turns the beverage from dark brown/red to a bright red), sweeteners (sugar/honey) and finally cold water/ice cubes.
In Egypt and Sudan, hibiscus tea is known as karkadé (كركديه), and is served as both a hot and a cold drink.
Hibiscus (also known in Sri Lanka as shoe flower, සපත්තු මල, වද මල in Sinhalese) is an ingredient with a rich heritage of refreshing Lankans. Fresh juices, ice teas and syrups made of the Hibiscus flower are famous refreshments among Sri Lankans.
Food
Dried hibiscus is edible, and it is often a delicacy in Mexico. It can also be candied and used as a garnish, usually for desserts.
The roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used as a vegetable. The species Hibiscus suratensis Linn synonymous with Hibiscus aculeatus G. Don is noted in Visayas in the Philippines as being a souring ingredient for almost all local vegetables and menus. Known as labog in the Visayan area (or labuag/sapinit in Tagalog), the species is an ingredient in cooking native chicken soup.
Hibiscus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some lepidopteran species, including Chionodes hibiscella, Hypercompe hambletoni, the nutmeg moth, and the turnip moth.
Folk medicine
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is described as having a number of medical uses in Indian Ayurveda.
Claimed effects on blood pressure
It has been claimed that sour teas derived from Hibiscus sabdariffa may lower blood pressure.
Precautions and contraindications
Pregnancy and lactation
While the mechanism is not well understood, previous animal studies have demonstrated both an inhibitory effect of H. sabdariffa on muscle tone and the anti-fertility effects of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, respectively. The extract of H. sabdariffa has been shown to stimulate contraction of the rat bladder and uterus; the H. rosa-sinensis extract has exhibited contraceptive effects in the form of estrogen activity in rats. These findings have not been observed in humans. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is also thought to have emmenagogue effects which can stimulate menstruation and, in some women, cause an abortion. Due to the documented adverse effects in animal studies and the reported pharmacological properties, the H. sabdariffa and H. rosa-sinensis are not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Drug interactions
It is postulated that H. sabdariffa interacts with diclofenac, chloroquine and acetaminophen by altering the pharmacokinetics. In healthy human volunteers, the H. sabdariffa extract was found to reduce the excretion of diclofenac upon co-administration. Additionally, co-administration of Karkade (H. sabdariffa), a common Sudanese beverage, was found to reduce chloroquine bioavailability. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen when administered with the Zobo (H. sabdariffa) drink. Further studies are needed to demonstrate clinical significance.
Symbolism and culture
The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali, and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, India, often with the goddess and the flower merging in form. The hibiscus is used as an offering to Kali and the god Ganesha in Hindu worship.
In the Philippines, the gumamela (the local name for hibiscus) is used by children as part of a bubble-making pastime. The flowers and leaves are crushed until the sticky juices come out. Hollow papaya stalks are then dipped into this and used as straws for blowing bubbles. Together with soap, hibiscus juices produce more bubbles. It is also called "Tarukanga" in Waray, particularly in Eastern Samar province.
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Pacific island women, and is a known shared custom that if the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or has a boyfriend. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship.[citation needed] The pink hibiscus flower has its origins in Asia and the Pacific Islands, where it has served as a symbol of beauty, femininity, and young love. It is commonly associated with the Hawaiian culture and the Aloha spirit, which celebrates love, happiness, and peace.

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named her first novel Purple Hibiscus after the delicate flower.
The bark of the hibiscus contains strong bast fibres that can be obtained by letting the stripped bark set in the sea to let the organic material rot away.
As a national and state symbol
The hibiscus is a national symbol of Haiti, and the national flower of nations including the Solomon Islands and Niue. Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. Hibiscus brackenridgei is the state flower of Hawaii.

Introduction
A Nicoise salad is such a tasty combination of ingredients and makes the perfect packed lunch – cheap, quick and easy to make, transports well and is very nutritious. Tinned tuna is a good source of bioavailable protein, omega-3 fats and selenium. Look for sustainably fished tinned tuna – I like the Fish 4 Ever brand. Cooked and cooled white potatoes are a good source of resistant starch, which will feed healthy gut bacteria.
Serves 2
Ingredients:
•2 eggs
•4 small new potatoes, or 2 white potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
•100g asparagus
•10 cherry tomatoes, halved
•1 little gem lettuce
•1 tin of tuna in spring water, brine or olive oil (avoid sunflower oil)
•Optional: Handful of pitted kalamata olives
•Optional: tinned anchovies
•Fresh parsley & cress to garnish
For the dressing:
•1/2 teaspoon sea salt
•1/2 clove garlic
•1/2 teaspoon English mustard powder
•1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
•3 tablespoons good quality extra virgin olive oil
Method:
1.Place the potatoes into a pan of boiling water and set a timer for 3 minutes.
2.After 3 minutes add the eggs to the pan (make sure the water covers the eggs completely) and set a timer for a further 3 minutes.
3.After the 3 minutes, add the asparagus and cook everything for a further 5 minutes.
4.Drain the potatoes, beans/asparagus and eggs and leave to cool.
5.Drain the tin of tuna.
To make the dressing:
1.In a pestle and mortar crush the sea salt with the garlic until it forms a paste. Add the mustard powder and work into the paste. Then add some freshly ground black pepper, the vinegar and the olive oil and mix until well combined. Mix in a little chopped fresh parsley.
2.Once the potatoes and asparagus are cool – assemble the salad. Peel the eggs and cut in half. Place the lettuce, tomatoes, asparagus, tuna, eggs and potatoes into 2 bowls. Add the olives and anchovies.
3.If serving immediately, drizzle over the dressing and serve, garnishing with fresh parsley and cress. If taking for a packed lunch, keep the dressing in a separate container and dress the salad just before eating.

Incredibly pleased with these Black garlic results.. I’m not one for extra kitchen gadgets, clutter and single purpose appliance are 👎 in my books so I held off on a garlic fermenter for many years, trying to produce the same results in a rice cooker to the instapot and everything in between but never quite reaching the results I was looking for (precise humidity and temperature play a critical role).
