One of the worlds largest cats seem no bigger than kittens atop a rock outcropping or kopje, on the Serengeti plains. Even the large stones, that seem to dwarf the lions, are no match for the vast expanse of land and sky that are the Serengeti. Lions will spend endless hours on these rock outcroppings. They give them a better vantage point for seeing long distances, and provide a modicum of safety from larger animals that might not take well to their presence. Lions also use the rocks to hide their young. Lions on these rocks can look out over their pride lands and watch for prospective prey while relaxing and sleeping during the heat of day. Doesn't sound like a bad life at all!

A lucky pride finds respite on an arbor topped kopje, or rock outcropping, in the Serengeti. Two young males enjoy the cooler temperatures afforded by the shade of the tree. Kopje provide some modicum of safety from other animals that don't necessarily climb rocks. They also provide a better vantage point for looking out over vast grasslands. These two males still enjoy the safety of the pride, but as time grows on they will be increasingly pushed to the periphery. Eventually, they will strike out on their own, but for now they have it made in the shade. #iloveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Lions #DrDADBooks #Canon #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday #ChildrensBooks

A wild lion lyin' around in South Africa

We were watching 2 lionesses and this young male for 45 minutes on their attempt to hunt wildebeests in Hwange NP, Zimbabwe.

The wildebeests slowly came closer, with the lions hiding nicely behind 2 termite mounts.

One wildebeest was close to the male and one female, the second lioness was ready to go, waiting for her mates to initialize the hunt. Somehow the male was not focussed enough and blocking the sight for the second female.

In the last second the wildebeest realized the danger and, for her, could happily escape.

The male trotted away yawning, as if he was feeling ashamed, knowing he blew the hunt.

There are several challenges to photographing rhinoceros in the wild. A softer touch sometimes helps me through this challenge.

This old leopard was called Vin Diesel. He caught an old warthog called Brood that morning, 27 July 2017.

Like it a lot, in my opinion it's one of my best animal shots.

... oh and there's a little bird sitting on his back too :)

Practising with the new camera thanks to Rod 😁 Managed to eliminate the bars of the cage we were in almost completely.

It is early morning in Ngorongoro Crater and a pride of lions who have made cape buffalo their specialty have attacked an injured bull. The buffalo are dangerous opponents that can critically injure or kill a lion. A young male has joined in the hunt. He pounces on the bull but is thrown off. As the bull spins around the lion is in danger of being severely injured. The tides can turn in an instant in the wild. Hunter can become the hunted and predator, the prey. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon

It can happen when we get too close and intrude on these predators' space...

This time I had a shorter lens ready!
