A young lion cub frets because he is hungry and mom and his aunts are tired, sleepy, and don't have much more milk to go around. They will replenish their supplies once they have successfully hunted, however, that may not happen until the evening hours, and perhaps not for several days. Females within a pride will join together to form nurseries to care for the young. Cubs may nurse from any number of lactating females, aside from their birth mother. These interactions help to form strong bonds within a pride. For now Mr. Grumpy will have to keep himself busy with other activities. On day 10 in the Mara North Conservancy, we spent the afternoon and evening with a pair of mating leopards, which is an incredible and rare sight.
In this image, the young leopardess rests in the thick grass in between intense mating sessions, while the much larger and older male leopard lingers nearby before his next approach.

One of the worlds largest cats seem no bigger than kittens atop a rock outcropping or kopje, on the Serengeti plains. Even the large stones, that seem to dwarf the lions, are no match for the vast expanse of land and sky that are the Serengeti. Lions will spend endless hours on these rock outcroppings. They give them a better vantage point for seeing long distances, and provide a modicum of safety from larger animals that might not take well to their presence. Lions also use the rocks to hide their young. Lions on these rocks can look out over their pride lands and watch for prospective prey while relaxing and sleeping during the heat of day. Doesn't sound like a bad life at all!
