The African bush elephant is the largest living terrestrial animal. Their large ears enable heat loss. The upper lip and nose form a trunk. The trunk acts as a fifth limb, a sound amplifier, and an important method of touch. We came across this elephant with a single tusk on a boat trip in Botswana's Okavango Delta, one of the largest inland deltas in the world. In 2014 the Okavango Delta became the 1000th site to be officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The guides in Kwara call her the "killing machine" and she proved it. Only 1 hour after I took that shot, she took down a Tsessebee.

While junior plays in the leafy underbrush, mom keeps a careful eye out for danger. She watches us intently, although I get the sense that she know that we don't present a threat. Most of her most tender moments with her cub are spent secluded in the heavy underbrush. Only the briefest interactions are caught through the patchwork of leaves, shade, and light. I find myself wishing I could step out and sweep some of the plants aside, but then that would be a very grave error, indeed! The sight of a male lion in the wild, where he belongs, is hard to beat.
This majestic male lion was one of two brothers with whom we spent time during one morning in the Khwai Concession, in the north-east of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
This particular afternoon was spent in the company of two young male lions and two young lionesses from the remnants of the Cheli Pride. who were resting in the northern part of the Mara North Conservancy before their night of hunting began.
After sunset, one of the males decided to attempt to chase down a zebra which, with two companions, had wandered right into the area in which the lions were resting; but fortunately for the zebra, the premature chase was unsuccessful.
One day this young male lion may be the king of Mara North, but for now, he is still honing his skills as a male lion.
A lioness and her cub share a drink at the river's edge. The cub appears to be a young female. That means that she will likely remain with this pride for the rest of her life. Though males in the pride may change as time, battles, and disease take their toll, the female members will change mainly with the birth of new female cubs and the death's of older lionesses. A lioness also stands to live longer than her male counterparts. Males are more easily injured or killed due to the fighting that occurs for dominance of a pride. Although an older female could remain with a pride for a long time, her older male counterpart would likely be driven off, where his time would be fairly short. That’s a mother with her two kids. It was very funny watching them. The baby was playing around and her big sister played house (in german: Mutter-Vater-Kind) with her ;) Just like human kids would do…
The very young one still wasn’t familiar with her extremities. It looked like she was still fascinated that she was born with a trunk and didn’t right know how to use her feet. She tried to be aggressive against us when she spotted our vehicle. But how aggressive can such a small cutie be? This was an awesome encounter!

On my second to last game drive in Africa, I saw my first leopard just as the sun set. I felt lucky to see one of these elusive, solitary animals, particularly with such a clean background and warm, soft lighting.
It’s been a year since my last trip back to Africa, with nothing planned on the horizon. I find myself yearning to return. Like many who visit, I have been drawn in by the continent of our origins. Nothing symbolizes the wild elemental nature of the old world better than the Lion. Contemplative, calculating, cunning and composed, these big cats with big attitudes exude a confidence and patience honed over millennia. It’s a big cat attitude that is part of their genetic makeup; honed and interwoven into their cellular structure over millennia. #Lions
Today was our first day in the Okavango Delta in north-western Botswana.
Our first game drive of this epic safari saw us arrive at the scene of a kill. A pride of lions had taken down a zebra foal, and the lions were feasting.
The pride consisted of a pride male, three lionesses and seven young cubs.
We anticipated the intent of one of the females, who, along with another female, headed to drink after feasting.
With the cubs trailing, the lions quenched their thirst.
In a tough game of positioning ourselves to capture images and video footage of the lions, while battling the challenges of their constant movement and the long grasses, I captured a profile view of one of the lionesses in the warmth of the afternoon sun.
What a great start to a wonderful week in Botswana!
African Leopard in the Mara North Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya. Seeing a wild leopard out in the open during daylight hours was a rare privilege indeed, and then seeing him hunting (albeit unsuccessfully) a warthog, was an incredible experience
