This is Pat, one of the jaguars at the Milwaukee County zoo. He came from Belize. He couldn't be released back in to the wild but found a home and a mate (Stella) at the Milwaukee County zoo. You can read all about Pat's story, jaguars and their habitats in a book written by the children of Belize and Milwaukee: "Pat the Great Cat: A Jaguar's Journey" published by SHARP Literacy, Inc.
The young female Jaguar is under two years old, a rather recent addition to The Living Desert in Palm Desert. She had just finished her morning feast and was doing the usual cat cleanup after a nice meal.
For photo techie talk, this is my most unfavorite lighting - contrasty, shade and sun, and, worst of all, backlighted. Oh, did I mention this is also shot through glass. I thought I would try something different for me - spot metering, to try and deal with the backlight. Worked pretty good until the cat filled the frame, like in this shot, and then my camera tended to overexpose. Needless to say, I'd rather err toward overexposure than underexposure, so I was reasonably happy.
I went to go to work the next morning, put on my hoodie and then realized it was covered in fur. I was flattered.
Taken at a photography day at the Cat Survival Trust near Welwyn. The weather wasn't the best. It rained most of the day, but luckily not hard enough to stop us! Beautiful cats, and friendly and helpful advice with the photography. Oh, and a delicious lunch.
I recently went on my Big Cat Experience purchased through Buyagift by my partner for a birthday gift and what an excellent gift it turned out to be! The whole afternoon was absolutely fantastic! It started at 1:30pm when we were met by our guide for the day, Theresa. She was extremely knowledge and very enthusiastic about the animals in her care and she had a wicked sense of humour which helped ease any fears we may have had. She had been told my particular interest was Tigers. So although we did the full tour of the compound- meeting and greeting all the other cats at the Foundation including Jaguars, Snow Leopards, Lions, Pallas Cats, Cheetahs where Theresa told us full details and history for each one- the majority of our time was spent with at least a dozen different Tigers. I was allowed to touch them and hand feed them which was just a dream come true for me. Each animal has a large enclosure, is well fed and very well looked after, all the keepers are very passionate about caring for these wonderful animals. I would definitely recommend this experience very, very highly. The attached photo shows me stroking a Sumatran Tiger called Asa, a 2 year old male who is being transferred to a zoo in Berlin very soon.
