Many countries have their big birding events, in Germany there is an annual winter bird count and a garden bird count in January, and May, respectively. And there is the birdrace on the first May weekend, during which individuals or teams try to find as many species in 24h as they can. In the US, but also around the globe, users of eBird are encouraged to participate in „Global Big Day“, which this year took place on May 10th. I am usually in the US for the first week of may, attending a conference, so I had the opportunity to go birding in the US that day. Just the weather started out pretty miserably that day - after about 24h straight of rain, the morning was still very wet. This tree swallow was up and awake, but not in hunting spirit with the rain and very little insects out. Fortunately, the weather turned much better soon after that, so that I could see and hear a few more birds.

Big Moose on an evening stroll in Denali National Park - Alaska, USA

Moose are the largest of all the deer species. Only males have antlers, which can spread 6 feet from end to end.

Moose have long faces and muzzles that dangle over their chins. A flap of skin known as a bell sways beneath each moose's throat.

An adult Male (or "bull") normally weighs from 380 to 700 kg (838 to 1,543 lb) and female (or "cows") typically weighs 200 to 490 kg (441 to 1,080 lb).

It was nice to see Big Ben without scaffolding around it.

A new chapter in Big Basin's story began on August 18, 2020, when the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through 97% of the park's property. The fire destroyed all historic structures and radically changed the landscape. The park now looks very different from how generations of visitors experienced it, but it is steadily recovering. Most of the old-growth redwood trees survived, new plant life is vigorously growing, and many animals have returned to the area.

The front legs on this Griz are amazingly huge. This photo was taken in early October on the North Slope of Alaska's Arctic region. He is standing on what is left of a Musk Ox calf, guarding it from ravens and the photographer. The Grizzly Bear was following a herd of Musk Ox and he got one calf and one young cow that I know of. This is one of the harsher parts of wildlife photography, watching the predator/prey scenerio play out.

While travling through eastern Hokkaido we were hit with a strong snow storm. I shot this shot of the big snowflakes near the side of the road. Hope you can see the flakes in this photo. 20250125 Big Flakes Blue - Hokkaido Japan

We weren't quite sure where CSX J780 was, but we knew they started at Mitchell, thanks to info from a friend. A quick (not really) jaunt over to Tunnelton from near Cincinnati landed this cool tunnel and awesome photo opportunity.

Here at "Big Tunnel," eastbound CSX J780 appears from the darkness behind a pair of CSX GPs.

This is Big Boy the crow. He's been coming around for a couple of months now with his mate. She is very shy but he has become quite friendly. We live in a very rural location so wildlife is very wild so I'm thrilled to have him be a part of my life everyday. Even if he does start cawing right outside my bedroom window at 5am every morning.

The Big Piney river in the scenic Ozarks region of Missouri, USA. This river bends often and is lined by limestone cliffs and woods. Photo taken from an old Route 66 bridge.

Camera: Brownie Hawkeye box camera manufactured in June 1958.

Film: Verichrome Pan 620 film which expired in December 1972!

Developing: Kodak HC-110, dilution H, for 10 minutes.

This film, which expired when I was a child, never fails to impress. Some of the photos came out spotty, but most were of good quality.

Main entrance to Ft. Chadbourne, Bronte, Texas, USA. One of six 1800s-era forts that make up the Texas Forts Trail. Ft. Chadbourne has a long, "Wild West" history as a stage coach stop, a military outpost, and part of the strife between American Indians, farmers, and cattlemen to control the surrounding territory. Ft. Chadbourne today features rebuilt original structures and a great little museum. You can find info at: fortchadbourne.org/history.html

When I visited, I took along an old camera I had just acquired, which still contained unused film of unknown expiration date.

Camera: Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model, manufactured in June 1958.

Film: Verichrome Pan 620, unknown expiration date. (Probably in the 1970s, given the clothing and hair styles in one faded photo which had been taken before I bought the camera.)

Developing: Caffenol-C

Been awhile since I have be able to capture an action scene
