When I am nowhere, casually wandering about, I feel I am where I need to be.

One of my huge peony buds covered in water drops after a morning shower. You can see the refraction of the hanger from a hanging flower basket in the big droplet...it kind of looks like a hook ;-) Please view large.

Big Sur is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast of California between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. It is frequently praised for its dramatic scenery. Big Sur has been called the "longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States," a sublime "national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development" and "one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation." The stunning views, redwood forests, hiking, beaches, and other recreational opportunities have made Big Sur a popular destination for about 7 million people who live within a day's drive and visitors from across the world. It is among the top 35 tourist destinations world-wide. The region receives about the same number of visitors as Yosemite National Park, but offers only limited bus service, few restrooms, and a narrow two-lane highway along the coast. North-bound traffic during the peak summer season and holiday weekends is often backed up for about 20 miles (32 km) from Big Sur Village to Carmel.

The stretch of Route 1 through the rugged Big Sur Coast is, probably, the most beautiful road I've had the pleasure of driving along. The views are fascinating, and every turn (and there are many) opens up a new perspective. It is a very slow road, and not just because of twists and turns, but also because I feel compelled to stop every few minutes and take pictures or just enjoy the scenery.

Bixby Creek Bridge, seen at the right of the image, is essentially the Northern entrance to the fascinating Big Sur Coast area. Before the opening of the bridge in 1932, residents of the Big Sur area were virtually cut off during winter due to blockages on the often impassable Old Coast Road, which led 11 miles (18 km) inland. The bridge, at 360 feet (110 m), was the longest concrete arch span on the California State Highway System. It is one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world. [Wikipedia] The whole road through Big Sur is an amazing feat of engineering.

I liked the way the foliage framed this upper portion of Rainier's Narada Falls. This is perhaps half of the fall's 168 foot (51 m) tumble. Taken in mid-September when flow was lower. Really roars come spring.

This is the largest waterfall on the Paradise river. A great example of a horsetail waterfall.

"The name Narada was proposed by Arthur F. Knight and adopted in 1893 for the Narada branch of the Theosophical Society of Tacoma. Narada is a Hindu word meaning 'uncontaminated' or 'pure'. Early variants on the spelling include Neradah, and the common mistake of Nevada Falls.

Curiously an 1897 map produced by Henry Sarvant and G.F. Evans marks a "Big Paradise Falls" along the Paradise River which is assumed to represent Narada Falls." worldwaterfalldatabase.com

Just one of the many impressive waterfalls at Rainier National Park.
