This is a local Big Horn Sheep herd that I have been watching for twenty-five years now. Usually they are hiding along the Black River in the White Mountains. However this day they had migrated to just outside of Springerville, Arizona and I just had to take a picture of them :)

Me standing by the Big Tree in Redwood National Forest. Almost 300ft (87 meters) tall, and about 1,800 old. Pretty amazing. The trail has many trees like this one.

a coalition of 3 large male Lions controls a large section of Madikwe Game Reserve (75000 hectares=185000acres, South Africa). They had to defeat several other coalitions in order to establish their territory.

This massive male is the dominant male within this coalition and the father of the current litters of cubs.

Big waves in seafront of Sisi village, Crete

Big Sur is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast of California between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. It is frequently praised for its dramatic scenery. Big Sur has been called the "longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States," a sublime "national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development" and "one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation." The stunning views, redwood forests, hiking, beaches, and other recreational opportunities have made Big Sur a popular destination for about 7 million people who live within a day's drive and visitors from across the world. It is among the top 35 tourist destinations world-wide. The region receives about the same number of visitors as Yosemite National Park, but offers only limited bus service, few restrooms, and a narrow two-lane highway along the coast. North-bound traffic during the peak summer season and holiday weekends is often backed up for about 20 miles (32 km) from Big Sur Village to Carmel.

For the Macro Mondays theme: “Speckled”.

Covered the the lens with a kind a textured glassine paper and got this result. You could get the same textured result by using an artificial texture in PS or Lightroom or an other program, but this is an easier way to do ;-))

Happy Macro Monday everyone!

Beautiful Giant Swallowtail butterfly at rest on a sunny perch in the forest near my neighborhood.

With a wing span of about six inches, it's the largest butterfly in the USA. An exciting find as it's considered somewhat uncommon to this area. Overwinters in a chrysalis.

Green-bodied Soldier Fly (Odontomyia sp)

This Jumping Spider caught a huge meal yesterday. It was seen hauling the Soldier Fly back up to its home.

We were driving on Highway 2 towards Spokane and passed the sunflowers-turned around to take pictures. It was only then that we saw the abandoned farmstead in the distance.

This one week old Black Skimmer chick just did the impossible. It swallowed a Needle Fish almost as long as him. I have the sequence of the entire ordeal, but this is the end.

Mother Nature never stops amazing me.

As if protected by bigger brothers, a nestled fern lay shielded from the elements, in the Kinnikinnick forest.
