Inducted into the UNESCO world heritage in 1983.
To the far left: Bundeshaus (the Swiss parliament building). the large church is the Bern Münster. The spire to the right of the Münster is Zytglogge tower. The smaller church to right of the image centre is St. Peter and Paul.
Look at that long row of stately houses on the upper level. They all appear to have terraced gardens that descend almost to the lower level in several steps.

Goethe wrote that Bern was the most beautiful city he had ever seen. Some would argue that maybe he said that only because he had not visited their own favorite city... but anyway, you understand him when you see Bern by yourself, even without the glaciated Oberland peaks in the background. Untouched by wars and revolutions, framed by the spectacular loop of a wild river, preserved by the moderation and wisdom of a supremely civilized people, this is a gem of a city, a dream of what Europe has been and can still be, at its best!

Bern (Bern in German, Bärn in Alemannic German, Berne in French, and Berna in Italian and Romansh) is the de facto capital of Switzerland, referred to by the Swiss as their "federal city," in German Bundesstadt, French ville fédérale, and Italian città federale. With a population of about 140,000 (as of 2019), Bern is the fifth-most populous city in Switzerland. Bern is also the capital of the canton of Bern, the second-most populous of Switzerland's cantons.
The official language in Bern is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the most-spoken language is an Alemannic Swiss German dialect, Bernese German.
In 1983, the historic old town (in German: Altstadt) in the center of Bern became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, is built around a crook in the Aare River. It traces its origins back to the 12th century, with medieval architecture preserved in the Altstadt (Old Town).
