Der Zytglogge (Zeitglockenturm) war das erste Westtor der Stadt Bern (1191-1256). Die kunstvolle astronomische Kalenderuhr und das Spielwerk stammen aus dem Jahr 1530. Die Turmuhr ist eine der ältesten der Schweiz und hatte die Funktion der Hauptuhr der Stadt Bern. Von dort aus wurden die Wegstunden gemessen, welche auf den Stundensteinen der Kantonsstrassen vermerkt sind.

To the far left: Bundeshaus (the Swiss parliament building). the large church is the Bern Münster. The spire to the right of the Münster is Zytglogge tower. The smaller church to right of the image centre is St. Peter and Paul.
Look at that long row of stately houses on the upper level. They all appear to have terraced gardens that descend almost to the lower level in several steps.

The city of Bern or Berne (German: Bern; French: Berne; Italian: Berna; Romansh: Berna; Bernese German: Bärn) is the de facto capital of Switzerland, referred to by the Swiss as their (e.g. in German) Bundesstadt, or "federal city". The bear was the heraldic animal of the seal and coat of arms of Bern from at least the 1220s. The earliest reference to the keeping of live bears in the Bärengraben dates to the 1440s.

The Zytglogge tower is a landmark medieval tower in Bern, Switzerland. Built in the early 13th century, it has served the city as guard tower, prison, clock tower, centre of urban life and civic memorial.
Despite the many redecorations and renovations it has undergone in its 800 years of existence, the Zytglogge is one of Bern's most recognisable symbols and, with its 15th-century astronomical clock, a major tourist attraction. It is a heritage site of national significance and part of the Old City of Bern, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
