Wrocławski Sound 2013

we kept some juvenile sharks in pens for behavioral studies (they were let go once we were done and the studies really only involved observation)

one of the cool things about lemons is that they are pretty social sharks...this is a bunch of them circling in the pen.

Students presented seminal research from the field of animal behavior as part of their BIO 485 Ethology course at today's "Animal Behavior Symposium".

Let's play fight with each other (playface)!

The Behavioral Operations Management Summer Institute for PhD students at the Ross School of Business of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (BOMSI2019). The lead faculty were Ryan Buell (Harvard Business School), Stephen Leider (Ross School of Business, University of Michigan), and Jordan Tong (Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison). From the website, "The inaugural Behavioral Operations Management Summer Institute for PhD students will be held June 10-14, 2019, at the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business in partnership with the Center for Value Chain Innovation. The conference is co-sponsored by the business schools at the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Support for this event is also being provided by Harvard Business School's Technology and Operations Management Unit. The 1-week intensive summer institute is designed to provide PhD students who are interested in behavioral research a solid foundation to conduct behavioral operations management research. Additionally, we hope that the summer institute will encourage collaboration and the creation of a research community among the next generation of researchers. Each day of the institute will include morning and afternoon sessions. Morning sessions will provide a general overview of BOM, review core behavioral economics/psychology topics, and discuss OM applications. Afternoon sessions will be focused more on small groups, practicums (e.g., applying ideas to actual research activity), and roundtables (more informal discussions). There will also be free time to prepare for the next day, have office hours, pair up to work on ideas, and hang out!" Pictures from the sessions taken over the week.

“Addiction” from the book Belief Therapy by DeGoede with Drews

Addiction is a compulsive behavior accompanied by obsessive thoughts for particular substances or behaviors that we believe are necessary for our existence. We also believe that without these substances or behaviors life would barely be worth living.

Drinking, smoking, sex, thinking about next meal, gambling, stretch working hours at office and more activities, when over done becomes addiction.

Addictions harm life but we continue them anyways. What we are trying to accomplish by obsessive, compulsive behavior? Primarily we are trying to eliminate the underlying feeling that we don’t want to feel. The problem is that ability of addictions to block unwanted feelings is temporary. Take for instance a smoke or drink can give temporary relief but after sometime the same old feeling comes back, but this time we are left with double trouble of old feeling and along with it guilt and shame, which leads to taking more drinks or cigars.

Addictions involve physiological and psychological component. Anyone can be detoxed from alcohol, nicotine, or heroin within three days to three weeks. Once they are detoxed, they no longer have physiological addiction. But to escape from the psychological component we have to learn to tolerate any feeling, anytime, anywhere. This solution is simple fact but needs to be practiced. Emotions may feel intense and uncomfortable, but they no longer a danger. If we repress our feelings then pressure builds just like pressure cooker. If it is not let out just like pressure cooker it will blow up and creates greater mess.

Learn to heal chronic, suppressed, frightening feelings from your past. As healthy adults learn to feel the feelings, sort them out and look for the underlying beliefs that are creating, heal them. This allows us to lead freer quality life. Learn to trust, care for, accept and love yourself and say bye to Addictions.

As with the hypothyroid patient, There is no single blood test that is definitive for hyperthyroidism. The hormonal tests must be interpreted together with the history, physical exam and the other clinical findings. TT4 and T T3

are tests that are recommended for a “quick” diagnosis (Stortz, et al., 2004). Occasionally, these results are within normal range when the cat is hyperthyroid. If the veterinarian still suspects hyperthyroid, then fT3 and TRH can be performed to help support the diagnosis.

TT4 =Total thyroxine

TSH= thyroid stimulating hormone

TT3 = Total Triiodothyronine

fT3= Free Triiodothyronine

TRH= Thyrotropin releasing hormone

Remember, these tests should not be used as the sole means of diagnosis. These tests are supportive diagnostic tests used in conjunction with the clinical signs and other laboratory tests.

I'm not good at these but I think it's a House Martin.

A pair of them have been flying continuously up to my neighbors eave. I thought at first they were late nest builders but while there is no sign of building, there is a mass of spider web. Could they be feeding on hatching spiders?

Here are several behavior shots that I find very interesting......If they do not get startled - Golden Eagles always will lighten their load before lift off. If they have time I guess they will scratch that itch also! Wildlife ~ So fun to watch! From the Pinedale, Wyoming area. This area is about 2 hours south of Yellowstone Nat'l Park with a population of ~1500 and elevation of about 7175'.
