I talked to the owner of this house yesterday. These begonias were going for free when the park was changing its displays. They've been flowering for years in his garden!

One of the plants we kept inside for the winter has blossomed.

This is a begonia blooming in Southern California during winter. I do not know the specific species. This one is in my garden. My mother had these growing in her garden for decades. I was trimming her plants and took some of the trimmings back to my house and planted them. That was several years ago. This is the result. They seem to do well in sunny to partial shade location and they need sufficient water to thrive. This one was planted in a pot in potting soil.

Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg

Begonia boliviensis cultivar, NE Seattle, King Co., WA, 18 Jul 2017.

A cross of B. U489 and the rather cranky B. sizemoreae. Those shaggy hairs are from sizemoreae.

Noticed a very faint scent, vaguely resinous.

Begonias survive the summer well in porch pots. I love the complexity of their petals, and the many sizes, shapes and colors you can find at the nursery.

Stigmatic surfaces of a begonia flower. In flowering plants, pollen lands on the stigma, is recognized, and subsequently germinates there, starting the travels of sperm downward toward egg.

November 13: I'm crazed today, and likely will be until Sunday, when I leave on a trip. Too much to do! I hate feeling this way. I should take a tip from these plants, and just sit for a bit.
