Having made the turn after crossing the Cheyenne River (running along the base of the hillside in the distance), the four motors leading train #M-RCHU are now in launch mode as they begin to tackle Wall Hill. Well sort of, they at least sound like they are in launch mode because they are tackling Wall Hill, which is the ruling grade on the RCP&E's mainline. So while they will not exceed the 10 mph limit on this portion of line, they will be running all out (RPM's wise) dragging this eastbound up to Wall.
We drove straight from Calgary to the community of Blairmore for our first hike of the road trip. This mountain is literally on the town's doorstep, but we didn't see anybody else on the route we chose. We followed a flagged trail for the first part, but that route seemed to return to town too early, so we bushwhacked up the ridge for a while. We then came across another flagged route near the summit, but we don't know if those two routes we saw connected.
Why does Mount Tam have to close at sunset? It should be open for blue hour once each month for the full moon. ;-)

Another from Hokkaido January 23 and taken during a lovely snow fall and for me probably the best light of the trip.

I went out for a walk early this morning, hoping that some fresh air would alleviate my migraine. Due to the headache I didn't take many photos but I couldn't resist to snap a shot of these already very autumnal looking maple leaves.
In the begining of this year, my second upload was that of a different composition of this same scene. I had a really hard time deciding which one to choose, and spent the whole year second guessing my decision. So now, I thought it would be appropriate to show, as my second to last upload of the year, this second composition, which includes the second bird. And before I take one more second of your time, let me wish you, my friends, and your families, a very happy Christmas!!

Eastbound Santa Fe train 757 –– from Phoenix –– accelerates out of the yard at Ash Fork, Arizona, on July 19, 1988. It is quite obvious where the 1.8% compensated grade begins. After some serious climbing and curving, the 757 will soon reach the Transcon main line at Williams Junction.

riding in my car, armed with a new license and a powerful feeling of freedom. salty sea air and spring wisping through the open window, a humid haze down the road. kelly green oaks form a tunnel over me with little bits of sunflower sunlight peeking through and reflecting off my sunglasses. still sand between my toes and on my knees, my feet hurting in a good way. my pants a bit damp from walking in too deep, but i don't really mind. beautiful inspiration fills my head like the waves fill my soul with calm. that feeling that nothing is wrong and everything is right. this is a new beginning.
