The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 11th of January is "anything with A", where a picture of something (person, animal, plant, object) that begins with the letter A is required. Thus, I have opted for some beautiful Jonathan apples, which I photographed in the Nightingale Orchard a couple of years ago, when I visited the town of Wandilligong in provincial Victoria. These beautiful red apples were just too good to pass up on! I hope you like my choice of the theme for this week, and that it makes you smile!
Jonathan is a medium-sized sweet apple, with a touch of acid and a tough but smooth skin, good for eating fresh and for cooking.
The Nightingale family has been growing crisp, juicy apples in the Wandiligong Valley and alpine surrounds for over 60 years. Four generations on, the Nightingale family have five orchards: two at Wandiligong located 5 kilometres from Bright, one in the Buckland Valley just below Mount Buffalo, one at Stanley, and one in Batlow in southern New South Wales.
August is coming to a close in Markesan, as Wisconsin & Southern's L595 has just spotted empty boxcars for the Del Monte canning company, and are now running around to the east end to pull the loaded cars of canned goods. The empty cars will be loaded with freshly canned sweet corn, green beans and many other tasty vegetables that will be shipped around the country. To the left, on the trailer is a fine looking ice fishing shack for the time when Wisconsin is frozen in a layer of ice and snow.

The old ghost tree next to the cabin at my place. Sadly it was at risk of falling onto the cabin - rotten at the base and leaning. So today it was felled. This morning I documented it for the last time before it became a year's supply of firewood.
Note the bird in the top of the frame.
Going to have to plant something new in its place.

But this has been a strange one, a full two and a half days before the second egg showed up. So not surprising that they did not hatch at the same time ( no matter what the books said ).
This purple heron (ardea purpurea) wandered into view and began hunting for fish among the recently flooded margins of a lake. I did get a couple of shots when the bird caught a quite sizeable fish that it had some difficulty swallowing. Photographed in Bundala National Park, Sri Lanka. So it begins
But soon I will be released
But not from my vow
I will always be here
For you to find
If you care to open your heart
Wide enough
To let such love inside
So it begins
With my blood and tears
The sweat of my endurance
But this is all for you
For that day when you need me
When it is hard to be alone
Fear binding you to earth
Trapping you below
So it begins now
Walk with me to freedom
Let us open the doors
To the welcoming light
And the new dawn
Leave our ties behind us
Break all your bonds
No need to return
Let the Light find you, as Easter brings us new life, let the Light find you in the dark.
