Lo que sorprende, sorprende una vez pero lo que es admirable lo es más cuanto más se admira.

a sign in the front yard of a house around the corner from us. we have had a bit of a problem with bee swarms this year, even had two horses killed this week by killer bees, sure has been a wierd spring!
This was one of about 10 bumble bees, possibly cuckoo bumble bees, foraging on goldenrod next to where I found the leaf beetle larvae. These are likely newly emerged queens, even if they are cuckoos, since once they have taken over a colony, cuckoos do not do any of their own foraging, Photo has been submitted to experts for ID. July 23, 2017.
*** Well, expert ID has come back on this one and it turns out that these are newly-hatched queen Half-black Bumble Bees, Bombus vagans. Which only underlines the difficulty of bumble bee identification since these are at least twice the size of the vagans in my yard. Thanks to Richard Hatfield for the ID. Jan 06, 2018.
**** It ain't over yet, folks. More experts have chimed in and most now agree that this is not a Half-black Bumble Bee. Some now believe it to be a cuckoo bumble bee but specific ID may not be possible. July 08, 2018.
