Back in the era of "The Beard" on the I&O, grain trains during harvest season were the chases to do, as long as the engine at Delta was facing the right way. On this day, the 4082 was clean, the sun was shining, and the beards were flowing as AJB piloted his ex-Canadian Pacific workhorse and 65 loads of corn south down Gods Railroad. In this shot, he is bringing the second half of the train across the CSX diamond at Hamler. Conductor, uhhhhhhhhh, Brad can be seen in the background.
Oh yeah, this shot (much like many others before and after) was fueled by Monster Energy. Beard approves.

Some Easter colors for you. Did you know pansy's have beard's? Reversed 50mm. This is just the very center of the Pansy, which is a small flower to start with. Very, very small. The whole image is maybe 1cm across.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
A lot can happen in a couple of weeks…
In the Land of the Bed there's been a mutiny, Mr Fox has been press-ganged and walked the plank, and Mrs PB has become a notorious privateer.

Taken looking straight down to show a different view of the Iris's yellow beard near the top of one of the fall petals.
A few of our Iris have finally started blooming. Not very many this year but always have to grab some photos. All handheld. Sorry for so many, likely more to come in the future as they never last long enough.

A fibrous climbing plant that was one of several plants that were used for making cord and and rope during the neolithic. Some regions have used this fibrous climbing plant for weaving baskets. The seed head produces a white 'beard' that will have made mothers talk and children, from prehistory through to history, laugh whenever autumn opened it's door.
Evidence of string now dates back as far as 90,000 ybp in a pre Sapiens site in eastern France. Rafts to get Neanderthals to Mediterranean islands would have benefited from just such transformation.
In this Swedish article, string is projected as far back as homo erectus:
This is the most colorful and attractive part of an iris flower. It's one of the three sepals. Sepals are usually small and not very conspicuous, but that's not so here. I am not certain as to what the function of the beard is, for an iris, (Iris) flower, but they are attractive. Possibly, the beard plays some role in interacting with insects that pollinate the flowers. Not all iris flowers have them, but most do. This is a photo of one of my wife's flowers, seriously cropped -- so seriously that there really aren't any larger sizes. Oh, well.
