This piece honours Métis activist Maria Campbell, who greatly influenced the lives of many Indigenous women. In recreating the cover of Maria’s book, “Halfbreed”, Anderson realized that while her journey with Maria began with this book, it was their friendship filled with laughter, stories, teas, lessons, teachings and love that mattered most. As a result, the artist recognized that, by focusing on their relationship while beading, through Maria, parts of her emerged.

Something to work on in the New Year.
Inspired by a wool eye dazzler rug woven by his grandmother in the 1970s, Wilson made his rug with 76,050 4mm glass beads, taking over 1000 hours of artistic labour. The work speaks to the notion of digital arising from both human hands and new media. At the centre of this classic handwoven Navajo rug design, two central QR codes link to short videos that affirm the continuance of Diné cosmologies and ecologies as well as the multi-dimensional and interconnectedness with earthly, celestial, human and spiritual relations that Indigenous peoples carry.

Swarovski drop with glass seed beads, modeled on my SDGrG Rinon! The matching colors were a complete accident.

This work references the artist's grandfather, Jacob Imaapik Partridge, as he appeared in the 1974 film The White Dawn. A midwife named Imaapik, presumed to be trans, helped in Jacob's birth by performing a Cesarean-section. Imaapik asked that, should the baby be born a boy, that the child be named after them, as they had always wanted to be a man. The work speaks to reclaiming visual sovereignty, naming traditions, resistance to colonial cis-heteronormativity, and celebrating Indigenous queerness and gender diversity.
