“When I create using traditional techniques or materials, such as smoked moose hide or animal hair, I am directly linked to my culture through a powerful connection that is rooted in ancestral knowledge, sovereignty, and love. Just as my grandmother created work imbued with intention and meaning using slow-fashion process – processes defined as labours of love – I create work inspired by her. For me stitching is medicine, and when I sit at my beading table, I fall into making in a way that isn’t considered labour.”

This piece honours Métis activist Maria Campbell, who greatly influenced the lives of many Indigenous women. In recreating the cover of Maria’s book, “Halfbreed”, Anderson realized that while her journey with Maria began with this book, it was their friendship filled with laughter, stories, teas, lessons, teachings and love that mattered most. As a result, the artist recognized that, by focusing on their relationship while beading, through Maria, parts of her emerged.
I combined my Hidden Depths flower (design by Lynn Firth) with 'Royal Chains Lariat' by Kelly Wiese (Beadwork Magazine Oct/Nov 2009). I added a brooch to the back of the flower so it can be worn on the lariat or as a brooch.

I bought this small (4"x6") jewelry box from a catalog that sells products made by indigenous people of various cultures. I don't remember where this was made, but I love the bead work. I've made a few necklaces with seed beads and I know it requires an abun-dance of patience to work with them.
For the All New Scavenger Hunt #3 - Beads.
Anyone who knows me will know I have an interest in all things Japanese. Of course this extends into my beadwork. This is most of my collection of Japanese and some Chinese books and Magazines.
This group of works honours the artist’s late mother and collaborator, Lorna Hill. They beaded together and embarked on ambitious community art projects together for thirty-five years. Thoughtful creation became personal condolence, a contemporary version of the ancient Wiping Away the Tears Ceremony, where handling beads “opens the throat, wipes away tears and clears the ears,” so the bereaved can once again, see, speak, and hear clearly. Sadly, Sam passed into the spirit world on 8 March 2024. His legacy will live on in the beautiful works he created.
I carved this in response to a post about genocide in India.

This contemporary coat, with matching hat, muff and boots, was inspired by traditional Metis clothing and Farandole, the artist’s 2011 international collaboration and touring exhibition with Breton designer and embroidery artist Pascal Jaouen. Here, Krauchi’s exquisite Metis florals and skillful construction transform the classic man’s capote and jaunty smoking hat into a fashionable woman’s wear. The muff is based on the tabbed fire bag, which once carried essentials for survival. Our elegant lady is prepared for a harsh winter.
