This was a bit of an eye-opener. A communist country with a market like this?
That wasn't what the propaganda had led me to expect.
When Randy and I crossed the street into this crowd we instantly lost each other -- just by crossing the street! I ended up having to call him.

The Grand Bazaar, Fetih, Istabul, Turkey, 28 October 2009. It was built by the Ottomans in 1455-81 soon after they took Constantinople and is one of the oldest and largest covered shopping centres (or 'malls' in American parlance!) in the world. It was rebuilt/repaired many times after numerous earthquakes and fires over the following centuries and was last renovated in 1980. Pictured is the main gate (interior).

I love going to the bazaar which only exist during the fasting month of Ramadan. Lots of food, goodies, clothes, shoes..anything and everything we would need to prepare to celebrate after a month of fasting.
Here you can see LOTS of yummy snacks that we serve to guests that come to visit. Pretty much spoilt for choice.

The Spice Bazaar, (Turkish: 'Mısır Çarşısı', Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Eminönü, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are different accounts regarding the origin of the name of the bazaar. Various spices from the Orient were offered here in the past, Egyptian Bazaar was so named because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. On the other hand, in the Byzantine period, the site of the Spice Bazaar was the centre of corn trade. And the word mısır has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "corn".
The Spice Bazaar was designed by the chief court architect Koca Kasım Ağa, but completed by architect Mustafa in 1660.
