The Grand Bazaar (or Covered Bazaar, Kapalıçarşı in Turkish) in Istanbul is one of the largest covered markets in the world with more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops, and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The bazaar contains two bedestans, or domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping, the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake.

Technically, the correct translation of the Turkish name Kapalıçarşı is "Covered Bazaar" and not "Grand Bazaar", simply because the Turks do not call it "Grand Bazaar". In Turkish kapalı means "covered" and çarşı means "market" or "bazaar" (as in the Persian 'bazar', where the word originates from and in English spelled "bazaar".)

[edit] Major sections

Inner Bedesten : It was the first building to rise in Kapalıçarşı, actually it is the Old Bedestan which forms the backbone of the bazaar. The names of the gates are: Bouquinistes, Hat Shops, Jewelry Shops and Costume Shops.

Sandal Bedesten : It has the most number of domes in Kapalıçarşı. At present it can be accessed through two gates, one is through the main gate and the other is through the Nuruosmaniye district.

Other sections of the Grand Bazaar: The architectural design of the roads making up other sections apart from the two bedestens is not symmetrical and geometrical; it has a scattered nature due to its formation which took many centuries with new parts being added. In this way, it stays away from the closed bazaar style of the West and has a character of an Oriental bazaar. This laid back settlement and scattered nature prevents the bazaar from being dull, and at the same time gives it a romantic flavor. Such a complicated structure and settlement not only maintains the monumental state of the bazaar, but also makes it a palace for shopping.

Though part of China, Kashgar is geographically closer to the Mediterranean than to the Pacific - as close to the Turkish capital of Ankara as to its own capital of Beijing. The bazaar was a swirling amalgam of both these distant worlds.

In Berastagi, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

From my visit to Korvon, the biggest bazaar near Dushanbe. Three square miles.

It's nothing like Shokhmansur, which is primarily foodstuffs. Rather, Korvon is filled with colorful fabrics with ostentatious prints on silk, cotton, velvet that women pick out, bargain over, and make their kurtas out of. Bright magenta cloths are draped across the top of the walkways to shield us from the sun and everyone is crimson under the filtered light. Vendors with heavy metal carts laden with goods push their way through the crowd, indifferent to whether or not they run over your toes.

And there's heat, but it's a different sort of heat than the kind that permeated most of my days in Tajikistan. It's a humid sort of heat from all the people and energy swirling about in the enclosed space. The kind of heat one can barely breathe in, much less think. Yet we still managed to follow our teachers, dumbly marveling at the frenzy and beauty of it all, and bargained for fabrics with our week-old language skills.

And in the midst of all the madness: an elderly man, walking through the passageway, serenely observing it all.

The Grand Bazaar (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı, meaning ‘Covered Bazaar’; also Büyük Çarşı, meaning ‘Grand Bazaar’[1]) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops [2][3] which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily.[4].

.

The Grand Bazaar is located inside the walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih and in the neighbourhood (mahalle) bearing the same name (Kapalıçarşı). It stretches roughly from west to east between the mosques of Beyazit and of Nuruosmaniye. The Bazaar can easily be reached from Sultanahmet and Sirkeci by trams (Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop).

Note: The bottom (lighter) section is the standard footer for all pages across the site. The green/yellow divide distinguishes between "human"/help information and tech information. It is not intended for the site to be coloured this way in the final design.

Trekkers and climbers would have an extra day here for rest and do the acclimatization. Every saturday morning there will be a weekly market in the center of the village.
