The woman is finishing the fifth stage (Ngebyok or wax removing in boiling water) in the 8 stage production of hand made Tulis style Batik. The eight step process begins with drawing the motifs with pencil. The second stage or Nglowong involves waxing the outline using the chanting, a small tool looking like a smoking pipe and filled with wax. The third stage stage (Isen Isen and Nembok)involves filling the motifs and second waxing for the parts that will remain white. The fourth stage(Medel) is the first colouring. The fifth is washing off the wax. The sixth is Mbironi & Nembok: re-waxing parts to remain in the original colour and cover parts to remain white. The seventh step is Nyoga: second coloring by dipping in the new colour. The final step is the Nglorod,removing all the wax in boiling water.
As you can see, most are the same design, although being handmade, no two are identical. Near the end there are a few different patterns.
All are hemmed on all four sides, with a wooden dowel at the top and bottom for hanging.
All are approximately 27 inches wide by 34 inches tall, with the exception of the last three.

Pulau keris terinpirasi dari suatu tempat atau pulau yang berbentuk seperti keris yang merupakan tempat para sejarah pada jaman dahulu.
Centreng terinpirasi dari tebing yang curam yang ada di panenjoan yang bisa dijadikan pariwisata karena akan keindahan alamnya.
Emped terinpirasi dari satu binatang yang disebut istilah kepiting dan bisa dijadikan satu inpirasi dikarenakan pergantian kulit atau cangkang dengan istilah sunda emped.
Kima terinpirasi dari kekayaan alam yang ada di dalam lautan dengan istilah kerang laut.

I designed, sketched, waxed and coloured my very first batik. Doomed. Haha. I did this with my arts and cultures society members today.. but what do you think? Anyway it's good to know my heritage better.

This hasa been my little project over the past couple weeks. Finally today, I got them sewn up. They are painted with acrylic and the resist I used is blue gel school glue which washes out.
