Batik is the traditional motif and design process originating in Indonesia and found across Southeast Asia. It appears in an infinite variety of colours, patterns and fabrics and is as varied and intricate as the archipelago itself.
Painting batik by hand is a painstaking, yet strangely hypnotic and tranquil process. Traditional batik painters speak quietly and make slow, deliberate movements, silently weaving their artwork in wax as the cooker bubbles quietly by their side.
Beautifully diverse and spellbinding in its complexity, Batik requires dedication and an elastic approach to time. In many ways, it is the perfect graphic representation of its homeland.

I embossed the stamp and used clear embossing powder. Then I painted over the top of the image with distress inks sprayed with water from my craft mat, when dry (the next day) I ironed off the embossing powder.

Batik (pronunciation: [`ba.te?], but often, in English, is [`bæ.tik] or [b?'ti:k]) is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali, and in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. However, it is in Indonesia that it is considered a national art form.
Batik has been both an art and a craft for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.
Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles. For example, the artist may use etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics.

First time working with batiks.
Just bought the fabrics and made my own jelly roll from 16 prints, 1/4yd each, 3 strips/color - not bad!
I love the texture, the colors and all the prints.
Next step, the pattern for the quilt? - once again, so hard to make a choice.
Kauman Batik Village in Solo, Central Java.Traditional batik garments and fabric made by hand and using canting and wax for detail. One piece like this may take a month to complete. Making batik by hand requires skill and patience. This lady has been training in traitional techniques for 5 years to make the hand-painted batik designs for which Solo is famous.

Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are found in (particularly) Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore.
Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has notable meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white, which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Visnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are most commonly available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.
Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns that normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch cultures. In the colonial times pesisir batik was a favourite of the Peranakan Chinese, Dutch and Eurasians.[citation needed]
UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009. As part of the acknowledgment, UNESCO insisted that Indonesia preserve their heritage.
