We were not allowed to take pictures here. I don't know why. We probably had to buy something first. This bad girl managed some secret shots ;)

The local women spend most of their time making batik souvenirs, of which there are many that visitors can bring home to their loved ones after visiting the village. Tourists can shop for batik souvenirs at bargain prices such as batik jackets, coats, corset-like vest and dresses for the women, while batik suspenders are sold for men.

The tribe also produces batik curtains, quilt covers, table cloths and placemat. The village is also known for producing beautifully handcrafted silver crafts and jewelries. To add to this, the Gejia ethnic minority is also adept and skilled at embroidery, mostly flat, plaited, and crepe embroidery made from silk and cotton threads. The authentic ethnic clothing, however, is usually not sold. These are those clothes and costumes that are passed from generations to generations inside the Gejia tribe.

Gejia is also renowned from its artistic paper art, and this is another aspect of their culture that tourists can take part in.

And while there, visitors are encouraged to savor local delicacies such as the traditional chicken hotpot and the sour lemon chicken accompanied by purple rice wine and a dose of Sichuan peppers and chili.

I found this 10 or 15 year old box of batik dye in a cupboard a while back and decided to use it for one of my manna dresses. Today I finally had the time to go over to my mom's and use her microwave.

The colors got quite matted after ironing these items, but the manna dresses are still almost the same. See notes.

Batik is a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique.

Balinese batik was influenced by neighbouring Javanese Batik and is relatively recent compared to the latter island, having been stimulated by the tourism industry and consequent rising demand for souvenirs (since the early 20th century). In addition to the traditional wax-resist dye technique and industrial techniques such as the stamp (cap) and painting, Balinese batik sometimes utilizes ikat (tie dye). Balinese batik is characterized by bright and vibrant colors, which the tie dye technique blends into a smooth gradation of color with many shades.

Batik (/bəˈtiːk/ or /ˈbætɪk/) is an Indonesian word and refers to a generic wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. The word originates from Javanese word "amba", meaning ”to write” and the Javanese word for dot or point, "titik."

Batik has been both an art and a craft for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.

Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles. For example, the artist may use etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics.

Batik is historically the most expressive and subtle of the resist methods. The ever widening range of techniques available offers the artist the opportunity to explore a unique process in a flexible and exciting way..

These sure look different, depending on which corners are put to the middle! I think I'm going with the one on the left and now that I have an idea how they look, I can add some more strips to each section.

This piece began it's life as a photograph of a tree lit up by parking lot lights.

Batik Barbie with cut hair (not by me! ) in a new dress from China The dress came with black elbow glove and is actually sized for the taller fashion dolls. The newer Barbies can barely fit in it and the older ones are way too large bodied. Incredibly inexpensive and I will be replacing the velcro with snaps. In my collection. June 2011.
