Bath Abbey is a parish church of the Church of England and former Benedictine monastery in Bath, Somerset, England. Founded in the 7th century, it was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries; major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country. The medieval abbey church served as a sometime cathedral of a bishop. After long contention between churchmen in Bath and Wells the seat of the Diocese of Bath and Wells was later consolidated at Wells Cathedral. The Benedictine community was dissolved in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Been living down here for nearly 5 years and this was one of the few times that I have done the tourist day out in Bath complete with open top bus tour, although any time I have to go to the city I make sure I pop into the little sweat shop over there because they sell the best range of liquorice.

As I’m not posting to Flickr as often as I used to I decided to drop my pro account and just let it die, it worked out to £2 a post last year, I have started a another account John Garghan Artist

A view of Bath towards Walcott Street with the Guildhall in front from the roof of Bath Abbey, Somerset. My tribute to the old 'Living Colour' postcards!

Back to Bath, in Mid-September and a couple of panoramics of the vaulted ceiling of the Nave. This was the Friday before the Queen's funeral so I knew it was going to be busy. In fact, so busy that the best pics were always going to be looking up. Each image is a four-frame stitch, taken with the old Powershot SX50. Still a great little camera!

The church architecture is cruciform in plan and can seat up to 1,200 patrons. An active place of worship, it also hosts civic ceremonies, concerts and lectures. There is a heritage museum in the cellars.

The Shot

This is a shot looking from the main shopping street towards the Abbey. There was light rain at the time so I set the camera up under a sheltered area.

I took the shot while staying with family in Bath over Christmas

Two views of Bath Abbey, taking our a day trip from Corsham.

(I confess I've actually cheated with this photo! Photoshop has just been updated and now you can change the sky! We had a dull, cloudy and slightly day trip to Bath, but I wanted to see how a blue sky would look!!)

With now traditional street performers, artsist and buskers entertaining the crowds.
