The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Bath, commonly known as Bath Abbey, is an Anglican parish church and a former Benedictine monastery in Bath, Somerset, England. Founded in the 7th century, Bath Abbey was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries.

During the 1820s and 1830s buildings, including houses, shops and taverns which were very close to or actually touching the walls of the abbey were demolished and the interior remodelled by George Phillips Manners who was the Bath City Architect. Manners erected flying buttresses to the exterior of the nave and added pinnacles to the turrets.

Major restoration work was then carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country.

The church is cruciform in plan, and is able to seat 1200. An active place of worship, with hundreds of congregation members and hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, it is used for religious services, secular civic ceremonies, concerts and lectures. The choir performs in the abbey and elsewhere. There is a heritage museum in the vaults.

The abbey is a Grade I listed building, particularly noted for its fan vaulting. It contains war memorials for the local population and monuments to several notable people, in the form of wall and floor plaques and commemorative stained glass. The church has two organs and a peal of ten bells. The west front includes sculptures of angels climbing to heaven on two stone ladders.

Bath Abbey is regarded by Simon Jenkins as one of England's Hundred Best Churches. For a detailed history please see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_Abbey.

Bath is a must stop in any large UK experience. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In this photo we can see part of its Roman Baths and Abbey at the bottom of the fifteenth century. And with sun and clouds

These are photos taken on my trip to Europe and the UK with a girl friend in October to November 2012. My camera I had then wasn't good with low light so some of these shots are not great but I have put them as my memories of the trip.

We arrived in late morning in Bath by train from London. Spent one night here and most of the next day.

After long contention between churchmen in Bath and Wells the seat of the Diocese of Bath and Wells was later consolidated at Wells Cathedral. The end of the day, looking up at Bath Abbey with the honey coloured stone contrasting against the clear blue sky. Got to say goodbye to Abigail outside the Abbey and make my way to my hotel. Looking forward to tomorrow as there is more catching up to do as Abbey and I walk the "Skyline" together, first food!

Been living down here for nearly 5 years and this was one of the few times that I have done the tourist day out in Bath complete with open top bus tour, although any time I have to go to the city I make sure I pop into the little sweat shop over there because they sell the best range of liquorice.

As I’m not posting to Flickr as often as I used to I decided to drop my pro account and just let it die, it worked out to £2 a post last year, I have started a another account John Garghan Artist
