Common basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) at Rio Tarcoles, Costa Rica. It is also known as the Jesus Lizard, Jesus Christ Lizard, or Lagarto de Jesus Cristo for its ability to run on the water

The common basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) is a species of lizard in the family Corytophanidae. The species is endemic to Central America and South America, where it is found near rivers and streams in rainforests. It is also known as the Jesus Christ lizard, Jesus lizard, South American Jesus lizard, or lagarto de Jesus Cristo for its ability to run on the surface of water.

We saw two different species of Basilisk, the Emerald and Brown. We got to see the Emeralds run across the water...cool!

This lizard is able to run short distances across water using both its feet and tail for support. This has resulted in the nickname "Jesus Christ Lizard"

Materials: Faux fur/minky, epoxy putty, Sculpy clay, steel wire, quilt batting, acrylic paint, correction fluid, various varnishes

Time taken: ~5hrs (White), ~7hrs (Black).

Features: Highly poseable bodies (particularly Black Basilisk, due to his longer limbs) , glass bead eyes

Using their specially adapted foot and toe structure, these aniamls can "run" across the water for about 4.5 m (15 ft) after which time they fall to the water and swim.

What a beautiful lizard, kindly posing for a shot as the boat passed by.
