A few miles apart, Basic City and the town of Basic are really the same community, even though they have different names. Basic was founded on the New Orleans and North Eastern Railroad, and Basic City on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.

Basic City was a small but important place in the 1890s, because it was near Mayerhall Springs. Many annual picnics and gatherings took place here including the Order of Railroad Conductors, who chartered special trains transporting as many as 1,000 people to attend their gatherings. It was also a place for political rallies, and at that time a large hotel was built here to cater for the visitors.
