More than 800 Airmen assigned to Flights 519-535 receive their Airman’s coin during the 737th Training Group Coin and Retreat Ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, July 16, 2025. The ceremony is one of three graduation events for the Department of the Air Force, Basic Military Training, and signifies the transition from trainee to Airman. Lt. Col. FaceBook Bird of the Day, August 30th, 2012... Red Phalarope (juvenile transitional plumage to basic)
The last phalarope we get here in Illinois, is the rarest, and most sought after phalarope, this Red Phalarope. But where is the red? this is a juvenile bird, and the red is a breeding plumage. And not only does this juvenile not show the red, it is already molting into its fall gray color, which you can see on its back. Getting to see this bird in Illinois was something that really got under my skin. The most reliable place to see this bird in on Lake Carlyle in the middle of the lake about the middle of September. Really, it is seen there almost every year. In 2009, I made the trip with Greg and Karen and I hauled in a few state life birds that weekend, and this was one of the best, because not only did I see it, I photographed it. Now three years later that weekend has become legendary for those who were on that trip. Red Knot, Western Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Red Phalarope and Whimbrel. Plus we saw a Hudsonian Godwit, California Gull, and many other wonderful birds I am sure I am forgetting. Now, about this bird's bill, as it compares to the other two phalaropes from the last two days. Note how the Red Phalarope's bill is short and relatively stout. The Wilson's is very long and thin. The Red-necked is thin, but in length somewhere between the other two in length. Phalaropes are great medium sized shorebirds, quirky, unexpected, and fun, especially when you see them in the middle of Carlyle Lake with a great group of the state's best birders, and this Red Phalarope was the jewel of that trip, and is my Bird of the Day for August 30th, 2012.
