Lawica Farm (run by the State from 1950). Since 1895 the country estate was the property of Napoleon Rutkowski (1868-1931), friend of Casimir Przerwa-Tetmajer and Stanislaus Przybyszewski. Count Rutkowski was a popular composer of salon music and mood music, and insurgent in Greater Poland Uprising (1918-1919). His farm, the only one in Sierakow Commune which did not succumb to germanization during the Partitions of Poland, was a base for the fast ‘Lawica Crew’ in the 1919 fight for independence against German enemies in the vicinity of Kamionna and Kolno. A number of centuries-old oak trees with a circumference of up to 5 m, one beech tree with a circumference of about 360 cm, one larch tree (310 cm), and two yew trees grow in the nearby park.

Learn to Read and Write Mandarin Chinese
1. Learn Pinyin. Pinyin is a kind of Chinese writing system. The letters of Pinyin originate from the Rome alphabet, not the Chinese characters. Pinyin is very useful for Chinese learners, even if you haven't learned traditional Chinese characters, you can learn to read and write mandarin with Pinyin. There are many Chinese textbooks with Pinyin, as well as learning materials. Although Pinyin is derived from the Rome alphabet, English native speakers cannot get hang of its pronunciation immediately. Therefore, it is very important to have a correct pronunciation guidance when learning Pinyin.
2. Learn to read Chinese characters. Although recognizing Chinese characters is not a necessity for learning Chinese, many people are attracted by Chinese characters because Chinese characters will make them feel closer to traditional Chinese culture. However, in fact, it is not easy to recognize Chinese characters. In order to understand the contents of the Chinese newspapers, an ordinary Chinese reader needs to familiarise himself with about 2000 Chinese characters - and this is just the beginning. It is said that there are more than 50000 Chinese characters (though some of them are no longer used). The greatest advantage of recognizing Chinese characters is that you can learn more about other cultures, including Cantonese, Japanese and Korean. These languages, though different from Chinese in pronunciation, use Chinese characters (or simplified versions of Chinese characters) in writing.
3. Learn to write Chinese characters. Once you learn to read Chinese characters, you may be interested in the writing of Chinese characters. Learning chinese writing is a complex skill. It requires patience and a little sense of art. The first step in learning Chinese characters writing is to learn the "basic unit", that is, the independent radicals, which form the basis of Chinese characters. There are 214 radicals in Chinese, some radicals are single words, others are just part of complex Chinese characters. When writing Chinese characters, the stroke order is very important. You must follow certain rules - for example, from top to bottom, from left to right, first horizontal and then vertical. If the stroke is not correct, then the word you write is wrong.
4. Read Chinese. If you want to improve the level of Chinese reading, you need to read at least 15-20 minutes a day. First of all, you can read some children's books (basically with Pinyin) to improve your reading level, and of course, you can also find some good materials on the Internet to read. You can also use the Chinese you learned in your daily life. You can try to read the Chinese tags on food, or ask a waiter at a restaurant for a Chinese menu. Once you have improved your reading level, you can get some Chinese newspapers (Chinese version) and try your best to read the articles. This is also a good way to help you understand Chinese culture and current affairs in China.
5. Learn to write Mandarin Chinese every day. In order to improve your Chinese writing level, you can write something in Chinese every day, no matter in Pinyin or in Chinese character. One way is to write a Chinese diary every day, write something about the weather, write what you feel or what you have done every day. If you are brave enough, find some friends who speak Chinese to help you check if there are any mistakes. Or you can also find a Chinese pen pal to write to each other. This is a win-win way, you can improve your Chinese level, and your pen pal can improve his or her English level. You can also ask your pen pal to help you modify your letter and send it back to you in reply. The last way to practice Chinese writing ability is to make a Chinese list, such as shopping lists, or Chinese tags for the household objects.

It’s 6.30pm and it’s taken us 1.5 hours to arrive at the checkpoint where we need to show our passports. I feel exhilarated. The final challenge is a short steep climb up a hill festooned with prayer flags, This is the ultimate viewing spot. It’s bitterly cold and windy but the views of Everest are awe-inspiring. There is a tiny cloud cap covering the summit, otherwise the views are of blue skies and brilliant white snow.
Behind the hill is a plain from which Everest rises majestically to 8850 metres. During the months of May, June and July this area is apparently crawling with tents of expedition groups. There are none now and venturing into this area without a guide could land you with a hefty fine. Clouds are starting to creep across the plain and the light starts to fade quickly so we catch donkey cart back down the hill for 25 Yuan (about £1.75). By the time I’ve reached the tent I can’t feel my hands at all.

Long grass on the boulevard making every facet of the game more difficult.
Front yard wiffle ball has very few rules. If the ball is connected with and moves forward at all, it is a hit. You get pegged to be out. Play isn't over until the base runner calls "ghosty" on base. Any, even slight, deviation from "Ghosty on first" allows play to continue. The long grass has caused the ball to not move very far after it hits the ground and lots of slipping and sliding.

This former cold war base has a new name, Saint Marie, and a slogan: "Home of the Adventurous" which fits quite well. When I begin to write something down about this place I honestly don't know where to begin. So I guess I should start by saying that almost everything you will be seeing in these photos is abandoned. This is a former cold war air force base that was basically left to rot by the government after less than 10 years of use. There are a few families that live in the condos still, but I would say 90 or more percent of these homes are empty. The schools are decaying, as is the hospital and all other buildings except those owned by Boeing. Boeing owns the runway and uses it for test purposes. And instead of moving their employees into the empty condos they set up manufactured homes for them.
The weather in Saint Marie is especially brutal, terribly hot dry summers and fierce awful winters. Saint Marie is like an island of condos and abandoned buildings in a great sea of prairie--nothing else is around it for miles and miles. It is true desolation. And when you drive the broken streets and see the condos with those big windows looking at you like empty eyes it is like you are in another world entirely. Then you see the signs set up by Boeing saying not to go any further and that essentially they are watching you--it's like something from a movie. I encourage you to look up other people's photos of Saint Marie and the things you will see will haunt you. Operating tables and beds left up in the hospital. Robes left hanging in the church. Everyone just walked away one day and this is what remains. If you are especially adventurous you can move here--the condos are a steal. A beautiful one fully furnished just sold for 30,000 dollars and there are others for much less than that.
If any of you are as fascinated with this place as I am I have compiled a list of other websites where you can see old and new photos of this place, as well as real estate listings for condos that are for sale:
