BRANI POLICE COAST GUARD BASE, Singapore (July 18, 2012) Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Team, assigned to the Legend-class national security cutter USCGC Waesche (WMSL 751), search a space for opposing force actors during a visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) training exercise. The event is part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2012 Singapore. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Burnetta Fears, assigned to 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, is shadowed by a staff member from U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, while conducting a turnover of medical checks for some Sailors assigned to aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Theodore Roosevelt is currently docked at Naval Base Guam where Sailors assigned to the ship are practicing social distancing and following other guidelines from the CDC, U.S. Navy and the Governor of Guam as part of COVID-19 mitigation effort during a scheduled deployment to the Indo-Pacific. The musical Beauty and the Beast is performed for coalition forces at Forward Operating Base Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan by members of the Kabul Dance Studio of Kabul. The studio is affiliated with the International School of Kabul, which is funded by a US aid grant. The dance studio consist of about 70 percent afghan students and the remainder are comprised of children of UN workers, contractors and teachers of ISK. The program is open to all.
Erin Jenson started the studio in 2008 as a way to get women in Kabul involved in a country that doesn’t offer much outside the basic needs of life. The initial thought was to teach a couple of classes, but the program quickly blossomed form a handful of students to more than 80 in the first year. The local community has shown great interest despite any language and cultural differences. Some of the students learn by watching the dance moves because they can’t speak English.
The family of five has spent three years in country, “ Some days its like OK this isn’t so bad and other days you think what am I doing here. It’s pretty intense!” said Jenson. “Its just good for people to see there are positive things going on in the country.” She thinks that people see the news with all the violence going on and they think it is all about military force and they don’t see the training and positive steps being taken.

Column base from the great Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.
This is the most complete surviving remnant of the temple's once lavish sculptural decoration (once one of at least 36 similar pieces according to ancient authors) and was taken to the British Museum in London soon after it's rediscovery in 1869, where it remains today (along with a few much more damaged pieces of similar column bases, which sadly the museum no longer allows access to)
This was once one of the largest temples anywhere (still evident from the surviving fragments) and magnificently adorned with relief sculpture and housing the exotically bizarre cult statue of Artemis / Diana of the Ephesians.
It earned it's status as one of the Seven Wonders after 356 BC when it was magnificently rebuilt following the destruction of it's predesscor by fire (an act of arson perpetrated by a man called Herostratus, simply to perpetuate his own name!)
The Temple later suffered from earthquakes and the invading Goths in the 3rd century AD before being finally abanoned in the Byzantine period, after which it was almost completely quarried away for the construction of other buildings nearby (such as the Basilica of St John) though some material went much further afield to Constantinople.
The site disappeared from view under several metres of silt (which covered the nearby former harbour) for centuries until British archeologist John Turtle Wood rediscovered it after a lengthy search in 1869,
The most important sculpted remains were from the square plinths and round column bases adorned with reliefs, one almost complete but mostly fragmentary, all of which went to the British Museum in London soon afterwards.
The site itself has a few scattered column drums, some re-erected iinto a column in 1980, and other indistinct bits but suffers from seasonal flooding, a sad epilogue to one of the greatest buildings of Antiquity.
Having visited the site's of 6 of the 7 ancient wonders one grows accustomed to the tragic artistic cultural losses associated with these once famous sites, but the completeness of the destruction is still a melancholy thing to behold.
Of the other wonders only the Pyramids of Egypt survive in anything like their original form, the other Turkish wonder, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is in a similarly obliterated state to this one (again with it's best surviving sculptures in London), the Lighthouse of Alexandria has been replaced with a medieval fort (pieces of it's masonry have been found, fallen into the sea), the Statue of Zeus at Olympia has long vanished (though the ruins of the temple that housed it survive) whilst the Colossus of Rhodes had disappeared without trace and not even it's former location is clear. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (the only one I've not visited!) is sometimes identified from indistinct masses of mud-brick ruins at the site in modern Iraq.

Kanaval is hot, sweaty, overwhelming.
It is also beautiful, exciting and vibrant.

Haiti has a unique traditional carnival, Rara, that is separate from the main pre-Lent Kanaval celebrations. Rara processions take place during the day and sometimes at night during Lent, then culminate in a week-long celebration that takes place at the end of Lent, during the Catholic 'Holy Week', which includes the Easter holiday. Rara has its roots in Haiti's an deyò areas, the rural areas around Port-au-Prince. It is based on peasant Easter celebration customs. Rara celebrations include parades with musicians playing drums, tin trumpets, bamboo horns called vaksens, and other instruments. Parades also include dancers and costumed characters such as Queens (called renns), Presidents, Colonels, and other representatives of a complex rara band hierarchy, similar to the krewe organization of New Orleans Mardi Gras bands.
Kanaval celebrations end on Mardi Gras, which is French for 'Fat Tuesday', also known as Shrove Tuesday. Mardi Gras is the Tuesday before the Roman Catholic holiday known as Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a somber period of fasting and penance that precedes Easter for Catholics.

I built this MOC for Andromeda's Gates on Eurobricks. It shows a MANTIS mining base in full swing, there's even some little loader trucks carrying loads of Awesomnium. The building has a full interior as well.

Grandmother, Nakhal Almadina Altayev Mohammed Almansour, age 63.
Nakhal lives in Wad Al Baseer where they abandoned FGM 30 years ago.
She was cut as a young child, but she has broken the silence in her community and she has not cut her daughters or allowed her granddaughters to be cut.
Nakhal Almadina Altayev Mohammed Almansour:
“When I was studying for my higher diploma - we were talking about FGM and I realised not all of my peers were cut. I learned about this very late.
“I had this internal conviction then that what happened to me is not good – and I couldn’t talk in public until my niece - the daughter of my elder sister - was about to be cut. Me and my other sister discussed it and we realised she should not be cut. But because of the grandmothers of her then, they cut her. But my younger sister was 100% sure she would not cut her daughters and she didn’t. Now they are grown up and are not cut.
“I have four daughters - the community was really putting pressure on me to cut my eldest daughters but I did not want to. I went with my husband to the midwife and he told her not to cut our daughters. I saved my four daughters from being cut.
“I will not let anyone touch my granddaughters, not even the grand daughters of my daughters or my relatives. We have stopped completely here. If I hear of it happening somewhere else, I go around and I advocate – I tell everyone to stop”.

O Complexo de Mocanguê se localiza em uma ilha dentro da Baía de Guanabara na cidade de Niterói, nele existem duas bases separadas pela ponte Rio-Níterói. A mais antiga é a Base Naval Almirante Castro e Silva, foi fundada em 06/05/1941, com o nome de Base da Flotilha de Submarinos, para apoiar os classe Perla adquiridos da Itália, hoje é a única base da MB que opera permanentemente com submarinos e seus navios de apoio. A segunda, é a Base Naval do Rio de Janeiro (a primeira foto é da BNRJ, após a primeira ampliação terminada em 1986), trata-se da principal base operacional da Marinha Brasileira e sede do comando da esquadra, ficam lotados nela quase todos os principais navios da esquadra, com exceção dos NAe's e do navio escola Brasil. O reparo naval na Ilha de Mocanguê é uma tradição que remonta ao início do século XX. Durante muitos anos suas facilidades de diques, armazéns, oficinas, etc., pertenceram ao LLOYD BRASILEIRO, passando para a EMPRESA DE REPAROS NAVAIS COSTEIRA S/A, e, em 1972, para a Marinha, por meio de uma permuta com a área do porto de Recife, uma vez que a Marinha havia desistido de construir ali mais uma base naval, sendo denominada em 1977, Estação Naval do Rio de Janeiro e, finalmente em 1986, Base Naval do Rio de Janeiro. Sua capacidade vem sendo progressivamente ampliada, conta com um Arsenal com dique seco capaz de docar, corvetas, fragatas e outros navios. Liberando o AMRJ para cuidar da construção naval e para a realização de grandes reformas.
The church at the former Amarillo Air Force Base is still in use. The base was abandoned by the US Air Force in 1968.
A Rhode Island National Guard / US Army C-23 Sherpa heads back to Quonset State Airport in the face of a threatening line of rainstorms approaching from the north. The aircraft had dropped paratroopers over Narragansett, RI as part of a preview demonstration for the Rhode Island Airshow. The C-23 Sherpa is the military variant of the Shorts 330 civilian aircraft.
