Bar Marsella is associated with Hemingway, maybe because he was the drinking establishment’s most famous patron, but it was also the haunt of other artists such as Dalí, Picasso and Gaudí. The bar has been a success throughout its two-hundred-year history. It is located at the junction between Sant Pau and Sant Ramon streets, in the heart of the Raval neighbourhood and still retains its original bohemian spirit: period lights still hang from its ceiling, there are age-old bottles covered with a solid layer of dust and cobwebs are draped everywhere. Entering is such as stepping back in time. December 2013 saw the Marsella’s future at stake: the building’s owners wanted the bar manager to leave the premises, but Barcelona City Council used its right to first refusal, buying the property and saving the manager’s job.

Strandbar, Posada, Provinz Nuoro, Sardinien, 2018
An den Wochentagen außerhalb der Saison geht es am Strand von Posada eher beschaulich zu. Selbst in den Strandbars findet man eine ruhige Ecke zum Lesen.

On the weekdays except the season it goes on the beach of Posada rather contemplative. Even in the beach bars you will find a quiet corner for reading.

Yesterday, we walked around the Washington Heights neighborhood and were shocked to see how many of the places we had photographed in the early 2000s, were now gone, victims of gentrification and modernization. Reynold’s Bar on Broadway is one such victim. This #Irish bar opened in 1932 and the #neonsign was installed in the 1960s. When we photographed this #divebar in 2004 and interviewed the manager, he told us that it “was the last of the Irish ☘️ bars in the whole neighborhood. There were dozens of them at one time.” Photo and full interview appear in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.

Bar-headed geese are present in the wild in UK in small numbers and are mostly seen as individuals in mixed flocks with greylags. They occupy lowland waters and nearby meadows or arable farmland. The species breeds in high-altitude zones of central Asia and winters by lowland lakes and rivers. Many migrate high over the Himalayas to reach their wintering zones, which are mainly in India and Pakistan.
Tomorrow (5/9/2014) is going to be the last day for the bar cars on the Metro North commuter railroad. They may still uses the cars, but they won't have a bartender on board. I've been riding the train for 27 years now, and figured early on that I'd have a glass of wine at home rather that bouncing along the rails at 50 mph. But when I did meet friends on the bar car, it was always a blast, and I know why so many are sad to see them go. This is one of the older versions of the bar car, with cushioned seats - most of them have hard plastic benches and are not very comfortable.
While walking on Windang Beach, at the mouth of Lake Illawarra, we came across a bar tailed godwit feeding. It was obstructing our path so it was eventually going to fly. It walked for awhile but eventually took off.
