2017 was the first year I visited the Rhyll Inlet, a place which very quickly became a favourite location of mine. The Inlet is a well known wader roost, including for some of our less abundant waders, such as this Bar-tailed Godwit.
On this particular Autumn evening in April, the combination of a rising high tide & setting sun made for a spectacular scene with beautiful light.
Although I usually prefer more direct eye contact in my images, for this particular photo I really liked having the bird appear to be gazing out into the ocean. The gorgeous golden sunset really lit up the birds plumage, which is complimented by the dark tones of the deep blue ocean. Look closer & notice the single strand of seaweed wrapped around the birds leg; the foam of the tide washing along the sand bank & the sea spray it creates.
This image conveys a real sense of peace for me & I am instantly taken back to one of my favourite places to visit each time I view it.

The Bar-shouldered Dove is a medium-sized, long-tailed dove. Adults doves have a blue-grey head, neck and upper breast, with a distinctive reddish-bronze patch on the hindneck, with dark barring. Young doves lack this patch and barring and tend to be duller overall. There is also a distinctive pinkish bar on the lower breast. The lower body is pale. They have a blue-grey eye-ring and reddish eye. They are usually seen in pairs or small parties. The northern subspecies hedlandi is lighter in colour. This species is also known as the Mangrove Dove, Scrub Dove, or Kookawook.
The nest of the Bar-shouldered Dove is usually hidden in dense shrubs or trees and in gardens, throughout its range. A thin platform is made from twigs and roots and is placed in a fork or on a branch. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks. Young doves are fed with 'crop milk', specially produced by the parent birds (a common characteristic of pigeons and doves).

You get a great view from the subway train as it crosses the Williamsburg bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan... I though I would have a walk at sunrise... no clear view for pedestrians though. It was a great walk with just a few cyclists and joggers for company and still a lovely way to start the day despite the caged in feel...

Again, a good bar scene. In a good bar, you ought to be able to write poetry. A lady friend and I did just that, one time, communicating through one of literature's oldest forms. One night, I read a book on 18th century London while sitting at a bar, drinking beer and having a snack. Traditionally, a gentleman is supposed to remove his hat in social occasions, but cowboys seldom do, and everyone acknowledges that there are exceptions to every rule. If you've seen the movie BITE THE BULLET, with Gene Hackman, James Coburn, and Candice Bergen, yo'll remember that the hooker tells the greenhorn/dude that she knew he wasn't a real cowboy. Real cowboys put their hat on, first thing in the morning. It's the last thing they take off at night. I asked my father about this, since he knew more real cowboys than I. He said that was right, but when I asked why, he told me that nobody knows.
