It's beginning to look a bit like Scotland!

From Peterborough we headed along the Barrier Highway to the NSW Border and the old Mining Town of Broken Hill. It is a long drive and a fairly featureless road, but this is what we saw.

"The way I figured it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?" -- 'Doc' Emmett L. Brown

In the early '80s, car maker John Z. DeLorean had big dreams for his sleek silver automobiles, but he probably never imagined that they would one day travel through time and drive into the hearts of millions of movie goers!

In 1985, teenager Marty McFly accidentally found himself behind the wheel of Doc Brown's latest invention -- a super-customized DeLorean retrofitted with a portable plutonium-powered nuclear reactor which sent him hurtling through the veil of time 30 years into the past to help his parents fall in love.

Doc explained to Marty that the car's stainless-steel construction helps with flux dispersal, an aid necessary for time traveling. When he later traveled forward to the future, Doc took the DeLorean concept to all new heights. Modified and futurized with a simple hover conversion from the year 2015, enabling the DeLorean to defy gravity as well as the time barrier.

Over the course of 130 years, Marty & Doc found themselves in a number of nail-biting adventures as they traveled across the space-time continuum in this highly detailed 1:18 scale version of the durable DeLorean time machine vehicle. As the duo quickly learned, if you're traveling through time, you're going to encounter some different kinds of terrain. Whether you're flying down the skyways of the future or riding the rails in the Old West, the DeLorean is THE time machine of choice!

Cayman harbor is protected by a barrier reef. Years of fishermen coming just inside the reef to clean their catch trained stingrays to hang out in an area now known as Stingray City.

Leaving Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef

Continuing our tourist trip to Cairns on our last full day in Australia we visited the Great Barrier Reef. This shot was taken from a glass bottomed boat taking a tour over the coral. Obviously this was taken through glass so the quality isn't that great but hopefully you still get an impression of the coral and the seabed.

The Thames Barrier Park is in the Eastern part of London out past Canary Wharf. The barriers were built in the late 70's early 80's to help with tidal floods from the Thames into London. This is something that has been problematic for London since its development as a settlement years ago.

I first found out about the project while seeing pictures of it online while doing research for my thesis project in school. You can actually see a sketch I did while researching that i posted several years ago on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wizum/67571559/in/set-1458801/).

It was really great to actually finally see this place and experience it first hand. And of course it was nice to show Jess just one more place she had never been to... in the city she lives in :)

Thames barriers on the London Thames

Response to GCSE Exam Title 'Barriers'

Ha Ha barrier - this is a type of fence which uses a liner depression in the ground so that from a distance nothing blocks the sight line. In country areas this is a good way to keep cattle from invading the garden and eating the flowers.

This is one of three images showing a Ha Ha in Valentines Park, Ilford. This park actually has two Ha Ha barriers.

Churchill barrier No3, built in the second World war, lies in Weddell Sound, Orkneys. Block ship Reginald lies in the water to the right.

Those temporary barrier things are PURPLE in Edinburgh! Proof that it's one of the coolest places on the planet! I really wanted to steal one.

Insulapack's Fire Barrier Insulation, Fibre FB, will not burn and blocks heat penetration of 1100° for up to 2 hours.

19/04/2017 #1570. A new feature on my commute to work, as the 'elf & safety brigade have put up barriers along the roadside by the "Red Lion" roundabout. I'm not aware of any incidents, but clearly they don't want pedestrians/cyclists crossing at any point other than at the roundabout. Perhaps a temporary thing for the Beer Festival held over the Easter Weekend.
