The branches of the Japanese maple in my garden.

Almost hidden in the trees, an African elephant holds its trunk high among the tree trunks and appears to be feeding in the bush during the dry season. Hard to believe that a 3 ton animal just a few feed away could be almost invisible among the bare branches. Mabula Private Game Reserve, South Africa.

Smile on Saturday: Tree silhouettes

Tuesday evening at 5:30 this week, the sky appeared to be on fire. We have record breaking heat for December going on and the sunsets recently have been spectacular. It was getting dark and the warm colors lit up the bare tree of my neighbors across the street. Their Christmas lights were turned on for the night. When I saw all of this beauty, I had to run in to grab my camera and capture the magic.

Today is an in-between day. One day more, and it will be the Winter Solstice here in the Southern Hemisphere. One day the other way, and I received my new lens! I've only had three mini-plays with it. One just after unpacking it last night (dark). One at 2.30am this morning, after I finally gave up trying to go to sleep until I'd had another wee play (dark). And one this afternoon after work. Gloomy, but at least I got to play outside!

i just came back yesterday from Inner Mongolia ;D

The trip was so awesome i dont wanna write it all out on Flickr cuz it would be neverending

im really really looking forward to the trip next year :D

We actually have sunshine today! I always love to see bare branches against a blue sky.

As I take Berry the Beagle to Parkbos quite often I set myself the challenge of making at least one tolerably good Black and White image each time we are there.

 

It is becoming difficult! There is not a lot of inherently intersting subject matter to be found, so success or failure depends entirely on the composition.

I have already posted a similar picture, nevertheless once again this beautiful view of a magnificent January day at a small lake.

It's one of my favorite shots of the last years!

Trees are starting to show their Spring Buds and these were some of the first ones I saw in the local Park.

A shot from 2009 showing the meadows in flood, helping to avoid flooding in nearby Stadhampton and Chiselhampton. There are plans to build a bypass through here if the proposed Chalgrove airfield development goes ahead.

Due to a double accident my broken arm is still painful. While I was going through my photos I came across this old photo....

Over 9 inches of snow covered the conifers and the delicate bare branches of a lone deciduous tree in the blue light of a January pre-dawn.

Photography means drawing with light. My first image of the New Year is about the dark. 2016 was not the best year of my life and I hope that its troubles are behind me. To all those who have been kind enough to follow my snaps and encourage me through 2016 I wish you the 2017 that I would wish for myself a year of Peace, Love, Good Health, an Open Mind and Heart, Earthly Pleasures and Spiritual Fulfillment. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my FlickrFriends and Thank You. Astronomers will realise that there was no moon on Dec 28th so I added it. Perhaps we will have to light up 2017 ourselves.

'COURTSHIP QUIVERING.'

 

As I watched this Chiffchaff singing and moving around the top branches of a Sycamore, I noticed a second bird fly in and land lower down. The arrival immediately generated a lot of interest/excitement for the bird photographed.

 

It seemed to increase the volume of it's song and started to quiver it's wings. Within seconds it descended down to the (presumed) female, using a slow motion, 'fluttery' flight.

I assume what I witnessed was a courtship display ... ?

 

* The blurring of the wings, held slightly away from the Chiffchaff's body, hopefully give a satisfactory impression of the 'Courtship Quiver'!

Straight-on view down Elfreth’s Alley in Old City, Philadelphia. Brick rowhouses, shutters and bollards frame a cobblestone path, with a vintage street lamp and flags adding period detail. Late-afternoon winter color brings out the texture and depth of this historic lane.

June has our Winter Solstice when night reigns and light festivals blossom. Luckily it is not as cold as some Northern Hemisphere places and this year has been fine and not too windy.

Tree with no leaves against a clear sky

This big dead tree stands out with it's bare branches.Only its base is covered in creeping plants and vines,covering it's nakedness.
