I was working at home one day recently when I heard a different bird call. On looking outside with camera in hand I saw a King Parrot (female). I was surprised to see it there as generally they are found in much more forested areas. I only had a chance for a couple of shots against the backlight. But here is the best of them. www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/Alisterus-scapularis. HWW

Basingwerk Abbey...Holywell, Flintshire, North Wales.
Basingwerk Abbey. Coordinates...: 53°17′17″N 3°12′29″W
Basingwerk Abbey is a Grade I listed ruined abbey near Holywell, Flintshire, Wales. The abbey, which was founded in the 12th century, belonged to the Order of Cistercians. It maintained significant lands in the English county of Derbyshire. The abbey was abandoned and its assets sold following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.
The abbey was founded in 1132 by Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester, who had already brought Benedictine monks from Savigny Abbey in southern Normandy. The abbey became part of the Cistercian Order in 1147.
In 1157, Owain Gwynedd encamped his army at Basingwerk before facing the forces of Henry II at the Battle of Ewloe. The Welsh Prince stopped at the abbey because of its strategic importance. It blocked the route Henry II had to take to reach Twthill, Rhuddlan. In the fighting that followed, Owain Gwynedd split his army routing the English near Ewloe.

Taken with a Lensbaby Velvet 56 at f2.8 or f4 (can't remember which).
At this time of year the Fall creates such beautiful colours in trees and this makes for great opportunities to take photos.
Stripped of their leaves, the bare trees branches rake the ever thickening sky accusingly.

Trying something a bit different yesterday by taking the beach scene through the bare branches on a tree.
Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :O)
A foggy start to the day at Holden Pools, the diffused light emphasises the leafless trees and bushes.

One of the most beautiful places I've been....the National Parks in the deserts outside of Moab, UT.
In Cincinnati we had a 2 day snow event that left us with 12" of snow on the ground. Fortunately we had filled our bird feeders before it all started, and we were treated to visits from many feathered friends as they fueled up to stay warm. ~~ Thru the window shot~~

Trees can look as good with no foliage as they do with loads of leaves.
So here's one that's still all Wintry.
Thank you for your favourites. :O)
A red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in its luxuriant winter coat and long bushy tail stands in the fresh snow in a forest. A few snowflakes cling to its coat. Its alert pricked ears and fixed stare suggest that something has caught its attention. Northwest Montana.

Lichen reproductive organs - apothecia- are round and occur in great profusion on the body of this lovely yellow lichen. While not a regular pattern per se the profusion of roundness is the pattern of nature seen in many lichens. This one was on a fallen branch at Cardinia Reservoir on our extremely wet weekend. Possibly a Xanthoria species. Sometimes these fruiting bodies are called fairy cups.
Lichens, or lichenised fungi, are organisms made up of a fungus and one or more algae or a cyanobacterium in a symbiotic relationship. Australia's has lots of algae and I once worked, many years ago, with one of Australia's well known lichenologists!

The only tree along this whole area near us on the Lakeshore that still has greenery. It is an evergreen tree but I am not familiar with the type. The lake is frozen but there are patches of water so one cannot go walking on it.
(This is my first Explore for 2020; I have had 92 in total now.)
My fairly large Chinese Pistachio tree continues to be almost leafless and I imagine will continue that way until next spring. When sitting on the patio at lunchtime yesterday my eldest son saw an animal (smaller than a cat) running under the Camellia trees nearby to the Pistachio. I suspect a Possum.
The photo is of the bare branches in sunset, doubled and then a homemade grungy texture added. HMMM:)

Another view of the abandoned house that I have posted before. It looks different from every side. Happy Window Wednesday. You can see the white van in the background.

A friend Howard Stanbury is thinking of buying a drone. A lovely January day gave me the chance to demo it for him while getting some shots near Old Headington where he lives. He meanwhile documented the demo Drones over Oxon. John Radcliffe Hospital far right.
