Funicular railway in medieval town of Bard takes visitors up to Fort Bard.
Bard, Valle d'Aosta, Italy.
from this morning's outing. It was a pretty quiet morning you could hear the duck wings beating their flight over my head and across the sky. Then the ruckus started the crows were cawing like crazy. I walked down to the tree lined area to see what was bothering the crows and discovered this barred owl perched in a tree just on the edge of the marsh. He was in the shadows and this photo was shot with 25000 ISO to get shutter speed up.

I had no idea what I was doing when I started this picture, but it turned out to be exceptionally adorable! I took this photo for the Mystic Realms June Photo Contest and it won 3rd place!! Thanks TMR! ♡♡♡
Thanks for posing with me, Planta!

This is Fort Bard, one of the most impressive of those that control the Alpine passes to Piedmont. In this case, it controls the Aosta Valley route and the Dora Baltea river right in a river gorge.
There were already ruins of fortifications from the 5th and 10th centuries, but it was not until 1661 that the House of Savoy began the construction of a modern artillery fort. This fort had its moment of glory in 1800, when it blocked the passage of none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, then still French First Consul. After crossing the Alps, his army was blocked for two weeks by Fort Bard, jeopardizing his campaign against the Austrian army (which he eventually defeated with difficulty at the Battle of Marengo). Enraged by Bard's resistance, Napoleon ordered it's destruction.
It wasn't until 1827 that the kingdom of Sardinia started the reconstruction of the fort, much bigger than it was before, in the form that remains today.

Bard Peak is the sharp peak near the center of this image and the more gentle peak to the left is Shakespeare Shoulder. I wonder why they named them that? The flat surface in the center is Portage Lake which is water coming from the Portage Glacier which cannot be seen from this vantage point as the glacier has receded out of the line of sight.

It’s raining tonight at Fairelands Junction where the soft drops echo splashes of myth and myrrh. A vast consortium of direct wonder illuminates in the crystals abound. It’s a treasured worthwhile visit for my soul as I spin from beneath the earth to find my purpose in tonight’s sojourn.

The Angel's Song
IT came upon a midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on earth, good-will to men
From heaven's all-gracious King!"
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on heavenly wing,
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.
Yet with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love-song which they bring:
O, hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing!
And ye, beneath life's crushing load
Whose forms are bending low;
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,--
Look now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
O, rest beside the weary road,
And hear the angels sing!
For lo! the days are hastening on,
By prophet-bards foretold,
When with the ever-circling years
Comes round the age of gold;
When Peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

Bardi PR Castello Landi
