Meta, het, hypo, etc morphs. Since 1995, reptile ownership has almost doubled in the United States. Breeding ball pythons for various color and pattern morphs is a hobby and a profession avidly pursued worldwide. Individual animals sell for as much as $500.00 to $5000.00US. People also get this wild about long haired wiener dogs and Sulkies. Pets of course are more understandable than roses and tulips, right?

This is Apophis my Royal (Ball) Python. This is the first time I've fed him since I took him home from the reptile store. Apophis, like all my snakes, gets frozen food which is defrosted then warmed up in warm water. A short time ago the NRM had the Great Gathering and had six of Sir Nigel Gresley's A4 locomotives (including Mallard, which still has the steam locomotive speed record) all in one place. Two have now left but four still remain.

"Monty" is a Royal (ball) python (Python regius). I've cared for him for 31 years and he's, most likely, close to 40 years old. Royal pythons are native to west Africa. The longevity record for a Royal python in captivity is 47 years.

This is my pet snake, we've been told it's a he but we're not sure. I've named him Padawan but my boyfriend insists on calling him Floyd for some reason haha.
If it's a little bit too dry, snakes and Ball pythons in particular can use a little bit of moisturizing help as an aid in shedding their skin.
This is a comfortable environment for them, that includes the wetted balls of newspaper for high humidity and a rock to give them an anchor and something to scrape against or crawl through and pull off their former covering.
This is the deluxe heated version, kept at about 88° to 92°f. They are so spoiled!

Ball Pythons, also known as Royal Pythons, are the most docile species, and considered the best as a pet, for those so inclined. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa,
and get there name from the fact they curl into a ball when frightened or threatened.
My wife and I came home from church to see some children poking at something near the pond. When the children saw us, they fled the scene. I approached the area and saw this snake. It slithered off into the pond and disappeared.
The next day, I spotted this snake again at the edge of the pond. This time I captured it, and with assistance of the Fort Worth Zoo, officially identified the species. It measured about 3.5 to 4 feet, 4.5 feet being generally the largest they get. I was able to get this snake to a veterinarian that cared for exotics. They gladly took the snake and placed it in a warmer to bring its body temp up. They confirmed an injury to the snake, apparently the kids had injured the snake when they poked it with the stick. I also received a call from a nature wildlife and reptile rescue center, which may contact the vet and place it in the sanctuary. I don't believe the snake escaped from its owner, but rather believe that it was discarded as no longer wanted. P.S. My wife was not pleased with me, especially when I had it in back seat to try and warm it some on the way to the vet. Trust me, it was secured in a sack and cover with a towel to keep it in the dark.
