on "Monty's." eye - He's a Royal (ball) python (Python regius). "Monty" is between 30 and 35 years old. Royal pythons are among the smaller pythons rarely exceeding 4 - 5 feet in length, are very docile and are native to west Africa. Notice his heat sensing pits above his mouth which enable him to sense the heat of prey animals from long distances. Photo by Frank
from Boise State University Reptile and Amphibian Workshop today at the Extended Studies meeting was "Monty." "Monty is a Royal (ball) python (Pythn regius who was one of the first animals to participate in the workshops. He's between 35 and 40 years old and has been "retired" for several years, but came back to school today. A sign of his age shows in the benign fatty tumor on his right side. Photo by Scott.
One of the shots from yesterday's reptile photoshoot.
This is a Spinner morph Ball Python. Doesn't it look so cool?! One of the very many very cool morphs I got to see that day!
That being said, yesterday was a lot of fun! I got to take pictures and play with reptiles all day :) I'm sure going to love this job, lol! I even got bit on my first day... by a mean venezuelan rainbow boa :) crappy phone pic in comments?
She was very nice -- was passing around the ball python to any one who wanted to hold it. Kids were enjoying the experience of holding the snake which was several feet long but remained balled up while being held.
So it's not a sand python, it's my baby ball Python Padawan having a day at the beach. =] They're from Africa so they like warm sand and today was especially warm so we went on an adventure.
Much better viewed large. =]
Benin. West Africa.
Ouidah
In most parts of the world snakes are feared, but in Benin they are revered. Royal pythons are worshiped in Benin, especially in Ouidah. The good news is that royal pythons are not dangerous, but the bad news is that these sacred reptiles are welcome Beninese households where they are fed when the doors of the temple are opened at night. There is no fear when the locals welcome these slithering pythons into their living rooms like an honoured guest.
The Temple of Pythons is a small room of twelve square meters that houses 50 adult royal pythons.
Einstein came to us through a snake rescue. Actually quite easy to care for as he doesn't eat very often. Just leave the light on!
I didn't take this picture but wanted to post one of my younger sister. This was taken during her trip to Edisto Island yesterday.
Lilith is a great eater, such a great eater that she comes out of her tub for it before you're ready. Well, she found my hand first. And I screamed like a wee little girl, wiped off the blood, told Jeff he was finishing because I was done. Then told him I was being a wuss and finished up myself. She's a good girl. Thanks for the vicious snake Ralph! ;)
was popular at Garden Valley, Idaho library November 12, 2016. "Richard" is a Royal (ball) python (Python regius). Photo of "Richard" and Scott by Kerri H. .
Meta, het, hypo, etc morphs. Since 1995, reptile ownership has almost doubled in the United States. Breeding ball pythons for various color and pattern morphs is a hobby and a profession avidly pursued worldwide. Individual animals sell for as much as $500.00 to $5000.00US. People also get this wild about long haired wiener dogs and Sulkies. Pets of course are more understandable than roses and tulips, right?
