The garage foundation stem wall was cracked, and the north side was pulling away from the rest of it, making the walls on that side unstable.
John, standing next to the pile of stem wall remnants for scale. That's a massive amount of concrete that needed to be pulled up!
Ray showed up one evening with a massive, ancient diesel-powered compressor that was older than both of us combined. Its job was to power the jackhammer he was going to use on the garage slab.

This is after I took a jackhammer to everything! I made a big push on Wednesday to break up most of the concrete. I look at this and try to picture nice paving stones, a six-person wooden table, the BBQ grill, and the potted citrus trees sitting way back in the yard. Soon, hopefully!
After a night of torrential rains, the back yard turned into an enormous mud-pit. Part of the project (once all the old concrete has been hauled away) will be to regrade and sod the yard, so that it will no longer do this multiple times a year!
The garage door was rusted and dangerous to operate, so to get in and out of the back yard, there was only one narrow gate, which wouldn't open all the way. This made it difficult to get the trash, etc. out of the back yard, especially in the winter.
We came back from WW to find that the foundation for the old garage was completely dead, replaced by a big hole in the ground.

What a difference half a year makes! While the patio is still not fully decorated and plants are still to be planted, it's definitely starting to shape up
