This picture doesn't really illustrate what I'd like it to, but this point in Turn 3 of the track was about a mile away, and I couldn't get a better shot without leaving my seat and walking a long way. This view looks lengthwise down the track to Turn 3, where the cars take a 90-degree curve from the long backstretch onto the short chute on the track's north side. You can just glimpse one little car through a gap in the fence. I think that's Alexander Rossi (Asti Spumante), but I wish it had been Pato O'Ward. Pato almost turned this thing into a great day with a last-lap pass right here, but he timed it wrong and wound up missing the mark.
Passing is the name of this game, of course. It's a car race, and the goal is to cross the finish line before everybody else. Unless you're Scott McLaughlin starting this thing in front, that means you'll need to pass people. And that's a big problem facing all of motorsports these days, not just IndyCar, but NASCAR and Formula-1, too. Cars just can't pass each other anymore.
There are a few reasons for this, and one of them is simple (complicated) aerodynamics. These cars can go fast, but anything moving through the air at 200 miles an hour is going to punch through a lot of wind. A lone car can do that just fine, up to a point. but they kick off a lot of air and make the atmosphere turbulent around them. So imagine Pato O'Ward is heading up the backstretch with somebody on his tail. He can get through just fine, and the car in his lee might do even better because Pato's already moved so much air out of the way. But once that second car pulls out from behind Pato to pass, it get smacked by the air off Pato's car and knocked back.
Two, the cars can go fast, but the racing circuits limit their horsepower, so they don't have a lot of acceleration when moving at speed. This is something you can probably imagine yourself, depending on what kind of driver you are. Imagine you're moving down the highway at 70 miles an hour and want to jump to 75. A 2020 Honda Civic might make that jump quickly, whereas a 2013 Honda Civic has to think about it. Racecar horsepower is set up so that it's more of the latter scenario, only at 200 miles an hour instead of 70. They could engineer that differently, but they don't, and I'm not entirely sure why. I think it's a safety thing. The kicker is that you can't really stomp the gas and accelerate past somebody on a race track.
Three, Like all sports, the racing circuits got really concerned about parity a couple of decades ago and invented all sorts of rules to make sure all the cars on the track are exactly alike. This especially bugs me in NASCAR, which was built on duct-tape innovation, but it's annoying in IndyCar, too. The circuits put thirty or forty clone cars on a track and are somehow puzzled that they're all moving at the same speeds.
There's been a lot of debate in racing about how to fix that. NASCAR keeps trying to invent drama by doing things like using tires that are purposely bad and wear out too fast. Formula-1 has a thing they call "DRS," which lets a driver open a gap in the rear wing and reduce drag long enough to get a burst of speed around somebody. IndyCar has a "push to pass" button, which gives a car a shot of extra horsepower for limited periods of time, sort of like a turbo boost in a video game. Seriously, it's a timed boost. You get, like, 200 seconds of it in 20-second bursts. So far, they haven't started using helicopters to drop extra boosts on the track.
But they only use the push-to-pass on the road courses. On an oval like Indy, you have to figure it out for yourself, and this turns the race into more of a chess match. You have to set the pass up in advance, put yourself in the right spot at the right moment, and dive left in the right place. There are only two right places on the track, here in Turn 3, and along the front stretch at the start-finish line. You might think Turn 1 would be a good place, but all the juggling they do on the front stretch was usually worked out by the time the cars got where we could see them.
So here's how it works. The cars are all in a single-file line coming through Turn 1, and they stay that way as they pass in front of us in Turn 3. Then they have that mile-long straightaway on the back stretch where they can build a lot of speed. If you want to pass the guy in front of you, you get right up behind him on the backstretch. Eventually, though, you're going to have to slow up to make this left turn into Turn 3, and that's when you jump. You've used the draft off the guy in front of you to get momentum, and now you jump to one side of the guy -- almost always an inside line -- and brake just a tiny bit less to slingshot around him. Once past, you have to gun yourself away from him fast, or else he'll come right back around you out of Turn 4, and then you've lost the race. (Poor Pato.)
It's a tricky way to drive, and it makes this a thinking person's game. You can't just gun it. You have to gun it at the right moment. Like I say ... a chess match. And admittedly, a lot of people like that kind of racing. It's fun to see. Some people just wish you could see it in more than just a couple of spots on the track.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. looked small, rather insignificant, on Tuesday as he stood near the 80-foot-by-200-foot high-definition screen on the backstretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He looked completely overshadowed.
He looked, well, human.
Sometimes we forget that he is. Sometimes we expect him to do bigger-than-life things like the bigger-than-life things his seven-time champion father did.
We expect him to be Superman when he's really just Clark Kent, making common mistakes on pit road as he did Saturday night at Darlington Raceway, mistakes the man in the red cape never would.
But there have been signs in the first 10 races that Earnhardt can be significant, that he possibly can do something big. His calling a team meeting to apologize for the pit road commitment cone violation that cost him a top-10, possibly a win, was a clear one.

I didn't have time to stay for the evening (standardbred) racing but I was on the backstretch for morning workouts.
