Bac Ha has one of the most interesting ethnic markets in Vietnam and possibly everywhere in South East Asia: " Sunday is market day in Bac Ha, which is the occasion for the various local ethnies to gather in huge crowds to exchange the last news, gossip, shop, and eat a copious lunch. It was visibly a festive event.

Review and photos of director Julia Bacha by Linda Dawn Hammond.
Rating ****
In a media saturated world where “bad news” prevails over good, and last week’s is “Old News,” to be glanced at, discarded, then forgotten, director Julia Bacha’s latest effort defies this notion of instant irrelevancy. Her award winning documentary, “Budrus,” is the story of a struggle which took place in 2003 over a 10 month period, the title taking its name from an obscure Palestinian village in the Occupied West Bank. Even in 2003 few people were aware of the events which occurred there. Were it not for the efforts of the filmmaker and “Just Vision”, the non-profit organization she helped create, Budrus would have remained an overlooked chapter in history. Instead, it is now serving to inspire others, that one can achieve peace and dignity through non-violent means.
“Budrus” relates the efforts of a small, rural village to halt the building of an Israeli “Separation Barrier,” which under the guise of protecting Israel from its Palestinian neighbours, intended to cut a violent swathe directly through agricultural lands owned by Budrus’ inhabitants. Plans revealed that the fence was to be erected within 40 meters of the local school and cut directly through their cemetery. Construction also entailed destroying olive groves and separating villagers from much of their arable land, which not only would endanger their economic livelihoods, but uproot trees of emotional significance for the people. It is an old story in the region, and one which generally ends in death, tragedy and despair. The most compelling reason to resurrect the example of Budrus is that on this happy occasion, the villagers became the victors rather than the victims!
The film closely follows the efforts of a village leader, Ayed Morrar, to engage his people to resist the wall’s placement, and how his activism affects his family. Morrar recognized that the divisions which have developed between political factions will only serve to weaken Palestinian unity, and he managed to engage not only supporters from both Hamas and Fatah, but his Ghandi inspired protests attracted hundreds of sympathetic leftist Israelis to directly participate alongside. International observers and media soon followed. After over 50 protests, which pitted the Israeli army and their formidable artillery against the peaceful but determined resistance of the villagers of Budrus and their eclectic group of supporters, Israel was finally compelled to redraw the path of the barrier from within the Green Line to No Mans Land.
The confrontations were tense and difficult, and would likely have erupted into violence, were it not for the emergence of a new leader, in the unexpected form of Morrar’s 15 year old daughter, Iltezam. By refusing to remain in the background, the traditional place of women in the struggle, she positioned women and girls at the forefront of the protests and managed to succeed in advancing where the Palestinian males could not. Though it does not serve to underestimate the inherent danger of confronting Israeli soldiers with direct resistance, regardless of one’s gender – we need only recall the tragic end of American Rachel Corrie, who died under a Israel Defence Forces (IDF) bulldozer driven by men. And then there’s Yasmine Levi to consider, who as the only female Israeli soldier on duty at Budrus, took on the aggressive role her fellow male soldiers avoided when faced with the women’s resistance. She exhibited no moral reservations using force against her own gender, and even appeared to relish the opportunity. If this film is a reflection of the growing role of women in the Palestinian movement, it also expands the incentive for armies to include women in combat roles.
“Budrus” was shot by 4 cinematographers, who between them managed to cover a lot of ground. Creative editing attempted to fuse the varying styles and techniques, not to mention the difficult task of shooting under adverse conditions such as teargas and dust. But in the final analysis, technical concerns become irrelevant when the outcome is such an inspirational message of hope.

The Tày people speak a language of the Central Tai language group, and live in northern Vietnam. They are sometimes also called Thô, T'o, Tai Tho, Ngan, Phen, Thu Lao, or Pa Di.
There are about 1.5 million Tày people living in Vietnam. This makes them the second largest ethnic group in Vietnam after the majority Viet ethnic group. Most are in northern Vietnam in particular in the Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, Bắc Kạn, Thái Nguyên, and Quảng Ninh Provinces, where they live along the valleys and the lower slopes of the mountains.

The traditional costume of the Tay women is beautiful in its classic simplicity. Long indigo or blue dresses with long, close-fitting sleeves are generally worn. These dresses are split at the sides, and they wear indigo trousers under the dress. They wear a silk belt over the dress, knotted at the back, with the ends hanging down.
