Keep your eyes open

Bac Ha (Vietnam) - When you photograph in such a place, with your eye glued to the viewfinder, it is very complicated to monitor what is happening to the sides and behind you. And in a market dedicated to buffaloes, you are never safe from a kick or a blow from the horn. Especially when you're in the middle of the herd. In the heat of the moment, you quickly forget the potential danger. It’s good for the photo, a little less for its physical integrity. At this market, I witnessed several buffaloes panicking. I confirm, it's better not to be near or on their trajectory.

Captured near Bachas Beach on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos Archipelago (0°24′7.15″ S, 90°17′8″ W), this bright Sally Lightfoot crab was vividly visible against the pale sand. Known for their swift, dance-like motions, these crabs are frequently seen along the rocky shores of the islands. Their striking red, orange, and blue hues make them some of the most eye-catching coastal creatures in the Galápagos. Sally Lightfoot crabs feed on algae and detritus, helping clean the intertidal area. Despite their beauty, they are hardy survivors—nimble climbers capable of jumping between rocks as waves crash around them.

The story of Bacha Coffee begins in the medina of Marrakech, Morocco. Built in 1910, the spectacular Dar el Bacha palace, which means “house of the Pasha”, united the greatest cultural and political minds of the century over glittering pots of “coffee of Arabia” or Arabica, as it is known today. Closed for 60 years, Bacha Coffee has reopened to continue the tradition offering fine 100% Arabica coffees from around the world.

Questo mercato domenicale è l’attrazione principale di questa zona, molto frequentato oltre che dagli innumerevoli turisti, dai membri della tribù H’Mong inconfondibili per il loro abbigliamento dai colori sgargianti.

Day 7 of the Galápagos trip

This beautiful male, Yellow "Mangrove" Warbler, with the rufous crown they have during the summer months, was in the bushes adjacent to Bachas Beach.

Of all the wildlife we saw on our first opportunity to walk the shoreline of a Galápagos Island, my biggest surprise was seeing *many* Yellow Warblers, mostly immature birds, moving among the black volcanic reefs at the shoreline while pursuing insects. Seeing them associated with the endemic Galápagos Marine Iguanas, Galápagos Fur Seals and the the ubiquitous Sally Lightfoot Crabs seemed very strange to me. A relatively familiar bird, surrounded by the unique creatures found on these islands. A sure sign we weren't in Kansas anymore. :-)

=======================

From Wikipedia:

The mangrove warbler (erithachorides group; 12 subspecies) tends to be larger than other yellow warbler subspecies groups, averaging 12.5 cm (4.9 in) in length and 11 g (0.39 oz) in weight. It is resident in the mangrove swamps of coastal Middle America and northern South America; D. p. aureola is found on the oceanic Galápagos Islands. The summer males differ from those of the yellow warbler in having a rufous hood or crown. The races in this group vary in the extent and hue of the hood, overlapping extensively with the golden warbler group in this character.

The yummiest fruits in the entire world. It should be sold in a candy store. Explore Award Jan 9 2018.

We weren't sure if we'd see them when we first set foot on Bachas Beach by wet landing. But after a short walk inland to one of the island’s many ponds, there they were: a small group of American flamingos, elegantly wading and filter-feeding in the shallows. Their pink color comes from the crustaceans they consume, a perfect match for the vivid life of the Galápagos.
