Bench in Los Angeles...

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and if you add your pink photos to this group you can help to raise up to €30,000 for local charities.

For each pink photo you add to www.flickr.com/groups/pink2008, Yahoo! for Good will donate €1, up to a maximum of €30,000. They will split the total equally between 5 charities in UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Lets add our PINK photos to the group please.

As far as im concerned $30,000 isnt nearly enough but every little helps.

Awareness should also not just be for October.

I have finally decided to post these photos. I made them for a proposal for--well obviously for this set. Unfortunately, I was not aware that Star Trek is a restricted IP and that Lego would not allow the proposal to go public because of course, what would be the point?

There's no point in keeping the photos and description to myself though, especially with the work that went into them. Description below:

'Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Lego starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no minifigure has gone before.'

Thrown through a spatial anomaly to a universe of modular building bricks, the crew of Starfleet's famous flagship find themselves sitting on your desk! With around 1800 parts, this UCS scaled Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation is lovingly detailed and mounts on an elegant display stand complete with dedication plaque. But the Enterprise-D is hardly the first ship to bear her name. Display the original Constitution class Enterprise from the 1960s TV classic alongside and at the same scale.

And of course, it isn't a Galaxy class starship without a separating saucer. With the secondary display stand--mounted with a Starfleet badge and the nanofigures of the main bridge crews of both the original series and The Next Generation--you can show off both the saucer and the stardrive sections at once! The nanofigures aren't just for display; act out some of your favorite scenes or make up your own story when you remove the saucer plates to access the main bridge.

Features:

-Prepare for saucer separation: When facing a highly dangerous threat, Captain Picard decides to split the saucer off into its own ship. With the secondary stand, you can mount the saucer and display it right alongside the stardrive section. Just swap the saucer for the battle bridge attachment and you suddenly have two ships!

-Control the action yourself: Remove the panel on the saucer section and access the main bridge. With the detailed nanofigures, the bridge crew is ready for anything. Place Data at Ops, Worf at Tactical, and Picard in his Captain's chair and 'Engage' at warp 6!

-Time for a temporal anomaly: Display the Constitution class Enterprise from the original series alongside its successor. Built to the same scale and detailed with a deflector array, impulse engines, and shuttle bay doors; you can command this highly swooshable starship on its five year mission of exploration and adventure.

-Assemble the senior staff: The nanofigures inlcude The Next Generation's Captain Picard, Commander Riker, Lt. Commander La Forge, Lt. Commander Data, Lieutenant Worf, Dr. Crusher, Counselor Troi, and the original series' Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. "Bones" McCoy, Chief Engineer Scotty, Lieutenant Uhura, Lieutenant Sulu, and Ensign Chekov.

Built for play or display, these two starships are sure to be popular with all ages. Whether you are a young fan of great Lego sets, or a nostalgic collector of Star Trek memorabilia, please support this project and help us to bring the knowledge of the galaxy to everyone.

'Make it so!'

It's breast cancer awareness month, which is also today's theme for PPT. We are all affected in some way so be aware everyone!

The Gemsbok is a large antelope of striking appearance with long, spearlike horns. It has a thick, horselike neck with a short mane and a compact, muscular body. A defined pattern of black markings that contrast with the white face and fawn-colored body are prominently displayed in dominance rituals to emphasize the length of horns and strength of the shoulder.

A new awareness campaign was launched at Manchester Airort today as part of an annual operation aimed at tackling Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Officers from GMP and Border Force will be joined by charities and partners from today, Thursday 21st July, until Monday 25th July in the departures area of Manchester Airport for Operation Limelight.

Over the next few days they will be speaking to holiday makers and other visitors to the airport and also showcasing new artwork that will be used throughout the year to signpost victims and those who wish to report concerns about FGM.

GMP and Border Force will then carry out the same operation in arrivals from Tuesday 30th August to Friday 2nd September.

This is the third year of Operation Limelight, with hundreds of families given advice on FGM and other crimes over the past two years. This year’s posters are aimed at adults and children who are travelling through the airport to encourage them to report concerns.

Detective Inspector Nathan Percival from GMP said: “This operation targets busy times in an airport with flights to key destinations for these illegal practices. The summer holidays are a prime time for parents to take young girls abroad to have this abhorrent procedure carried out.

“By working with Border Force and partner agencies we want to educate people passing through the airport on what to look out for and how they can help potential victims of FGM but also to send a clear message to anyone inflicting this procedure on their child or carrying it out themselves – this crime carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and we will do everything that we can to keep children safe from this type of harm.”

Minister for Vulnerability, Safeguarding and Countering Extremism Sarah Newton said: “FGM is a crime and it is child abuse. We will not tolerate a practice that can cause extreme and lifelong physical and psychological suffering to women and girls.

“The summer holidays are a time when girls may be most at risk of being taken abroad to undergo FGM, and hundreds of Border Force officials at UK ports and airports are trained to look for potential victims and perpetrators. I highly commend the work of Greater Manchester Police, Border Force and the charities and organisations involved at Manchester airport to keep these girls safe.

"The UK is now a world leader in tackling FGM, and we have significantly strengthened the law. But too many people are still living in silence. We know that changing attitudes within communities is key to ending FGM, and we will continue to work with community organisations and survivors to help drive progress.”

Operation Limelight began just after GMP issued its first FGM protection order last July. Since then the Force has issued five orders in total, protecting people from the illegal procedure.

Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said: “Female genital mutilation is child abuse. We all have a responsibility to protect our children and put a stop to this horrendous and criminal practice. We’ve been doing a lot of work across Greater Manchester, bringing police, councils, health, education and voluntary organisations together to raise awareness of female genital mutilation, educate communities and encourage people to speak out. This operation is part of this positive work and I hope it sends a strong message to victims that they don’t have to suffer in silence – help is available.”

FGM involves the partial or total removal of the external genitalia or injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural or any other non-therapeutic reasons. It is prevalent in countries in mid and northern Africa and parts of Asia. It is allegedly carried out to safeguard a young woman's virginity and her family's honour, and can involve a festival or celebration as part of the ceremony.

Passengers are reassured that although incidents do not happen on a daily occurrence, the summer holidays call for extra vigilance as parents often use this period as an opportunity to take young girls abroad.

For full guidelines on honour-based abuse, FGM and the law please visit the Home Office website – link below. Anyone with concerns is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or the FGM Helpline on 0800 028 3550. You can also contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.

To find out more about Greater Manchester Police please visit www.gmp.police.uk

You should call 101, national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.

Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.

You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

First flown with the Embraer test registration PT-SIZ, this aircraft was delivered to Regional Airlines as F-HBLG in Feb-09 and operated for Air France in full livery. In Mar-13, Regional Airlines was combined with Brit Air and Airlinair to form 'HOP! for Air France', although as far as I'm aware they still operate on their own AOC's. Current (May-18).

October 15th is the International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, a global expression of sympathy, remembrance and support for those too many families who are affected by the loss of a baby in pregnancy or beyond.

Across the world, at 7pm local time, candles will be lit for those babies who have died. At this time we will remember them all; either our own children or babies of others who have nonetheless touched our lives in such a brief time.

In the UK, Babyloss is a collaborative awareness effort involving charities and voluntary organisations which support those affected, and lobby for research and action to understand more about and, where possible, prevent pregnancy loss.

You don't have to have been affected by loss yourself to help; though sadly the numbers of families affected makes it unlikely that there in no-one in your circle that has not suffered in this way.

You can help in so many ways:

* If you know someone grieving for their child - drop them a line today. Give them a hug. Show them you remember their loss and that you are there to share their memories and sadness. Too many families feel locked in silence, afraid to start a conversation, afraid to upset others, and alone in their grief.

* Click on the site www.babyloss.com, and find out more about the organisations who support those in need. Could you volunteer? Could you raise money or awareness for these causes?

* Even quietly finding out more and being able to pay that understanding and support forward if you encounter a person in need in the future is invaluable. Sometimes the biggest change is in thought, not just in deed.

With this shot I am marking the day, and I welcome you to share in marking it.

On April 1, 2017, Reconciliation Pole was raised on the UBC campus. The 55-fot cedar pole describes the times before, during and after the Residential School era in Canada -- a horrifying part of our history. The artist that designed the pole and led the team of carvers is Haida Master Carver 7idansuu (pronounced Edenshaw), also know as James Hart. He is also a hereditary chief. Reconciliation pole is a beautiful and heartbreaking work of art. The pole has thousands of copper nails in it, one to represent each first nations child that died in residential schools across Canada.

This is the last of the three self portraits from the abandoned Nike Missile Base. This is an underground bunker where Kilroy tells me they kept the tactical missiles. They're no longer here, of course.

Luckily the hatch was open, allowing me to explore all the odd and crusty artifacts. If you view this shot large, you can see a typewriter just over my left shoulder. A few minutes earlier, I had moved it in an attempt to do a portrait focusing on that typewriter. I felt much less comfortable with that plan when moving the typewriter, a field mouse nonchalantly crawled out of the keys, stared at me, and sauntered off.

Arthritis Awareness is a cause very close to my heart, as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. For many years, I believed that arthritis mainly affected older people, and was the odd twinge in the joint. That was until my auntie had it at the age of 20- it's her hand on the right hand side. I started to understand then more about how a condition such as arthritis can have a profound impact upon your life.

Then it happened to me, aged 28 and I felt like my whole world as I knew it had ended, probably because it had. My life now is utterly different from my life before, and I have swung from being housebound, to being back at work, and now I am housebound once more and using a wheelchair.

You see, there is no cure all for arthritis, and it doesn't discriminate, young, old, tall, short, slim, fat, it's an equal opportunities destroyer. The great thing is that as we progress, we learn more about this condition and how best to treat it.

If you would like to understand more about arthritis and the effect that it can have, please read this post, it's a good starting point:

batsgirl.blogspot.co.uk/2008/04/gorilla-in-your-house.html

Arthritis can't kill you, but it can take your life.

World Arthritis Day has been celebrated 1996 by ARI (Arthritis Rheumatism International) first. It is being celebrated each year on October 12th.

Now, people with arthritis from around the world join together to make their voices heard on this day. You can join in and raise this voice also!

The aims of World Arthritis Day are:

To raise awareness of arthritis in all its forms among the medical community, people with arthritis and the general public

To influence public policy by making decision-makers aware of the burden of arthritis and the steps which can be taken to ease it

To ensure all people with arthritis and their caregivers are aware of the vast support network available to them.

I want to finish 2010 in posting a shot of my favorite animal:

African Wild Dog

I think, this may be the best shot of that endangered animal, I ever took (and I took a lot).

Even though it´s a close-up it still has some dynamics and it shows for what these creatures are legend:

restlessness

Who ever was able to follow Wild Dogs on their hunting attitude will know what I mean.

African Wild Dogs (Lycaon Pictus) are highly endangered.

Only about 4500 are living in the wild.

Although they are not as cute as Polar Bears or Cheetah, not as human as Gorilla or Chimpanzee, they deserve our protection.

They are excellent hunters, much more successfull than any of the big cats.

They chase their prey for miles and can reach a speed up to 25kmh.

Despite that, they do have a great sense of family. The offspring gets food first. We often witnessed, that the adult dogs didn´t get any food, when the prey was only enough for the pups.

Photographing African Wild Dogs is always a bit of a challenge. Besides the greatest challenge of finding them, it´s tricky to get contrast in their face because it´s mostly totally black. You have to find a compromise as you don´t want to burn out the bright parts.

You also don´t want to shoot them just sitting or lying, because their interactive behaviour is what makes them so attractive. As they always appear in packs, you will likely concentrate on the "wrong" animals. The interesting interaction may happen between other dogs than you´re focussed on in that particular moment. So don´t just look through your view finder. My wife always helps me and points out if something interesting is happening while I´m focussed on a different spot.

You also have to position yourself a bit further away to capture all the interaction. The animals may likely come close to you, and if they are too close, you will look down to them, which results in an unattractive angle in photos. The eye level is the most important thing in animal photography IMHO. Sitting in a Safari vehicle mostly means you´re having a bad angle, but you can´t do much against it.

CN 8357, CN's SD75IACC painted in a scheme bringing to light suicide awareness and prevention, leads CN M33891-02 through Bloomingdale, IL on a chilly evening.

To quote the Trains Magazine article when it was released: "The 988 Lifeline logo and “You Are Not Alone” message are displayed on the long hood of SD75IACC No. 8357. In a LinkedIn post, Jonathan Quinley, a U.S. Central East regional sales account manager for the railroad, wrote that he had started the project 18 months ago with a sketch of a design for a CN locomotive being rebuilt. “After sharing the design, getting approvals, hours and hours of teamwork, and incredible support from coworkers, family … and friends, I’m proud to share something deeply meaningful: A locomotive dedicated to suicide prevention. “Trains are moving billboards, and engines always draw attention. What better way to spread a message that matters — you are not alone, and there is always someone to support you."

For me personally, with June being men's mental health awareness month and having lost a good friend to suicide when I was 16, this one is a special catch and honors him. Fly high Graham, and all who suffer from mental health struggles and suicidal thoughts, you are NOT alone in this fight!

Shoutout to Dan as well for letting me use his setup for this while he used mine :)

Diwali (also spelled Devali in certain regions) or Deepavali, popularly known as the "festival of lights", is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, occurring between mid-October and mid-November. For Hindus, Diwali is the most important festival of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. Deepavali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.

The name Diwali is itself a contraction of the word "Deepavali" (Sanskrit: दीपावली Dīpāvalī), which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas, or dīpa in Sanskrit: दीप) filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends. Most Indian business communities begin the financial year on the first day of Diwali.

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

In Jainism, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC. In Sikhism, Deepavali commemorates the return of Guru Har Gobind Ji to Amritsar after freeing 52 Hindu kings imprisoned in Fort Gwalior by defeating Emperor Jahangir; the people lit candles and diyas to celebrate his return. This is the reason Sikhs also refer to Deepavali as Bandi Chhorh Divas, "the day of release of detainees". Deepavali is widely celebrated in both India and Nepal.

The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami - that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj) and on this day sisters invite

In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities.

While Deepavali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Deepavali as the "victory of good over evil", refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Ananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

While the story behind Deepavali and the manner of celebration varies from region to region (festive fireworks, worship, lights, sharing of sweets), the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying Reality of all things (Brahman).
